Marquis Who's Who Honors Christina L. Goethel, PhD, For Excellence in Education

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / November 25, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors Christina L. Goethel, PhD, as a leading educator in marine science. With more than a decade of professional experience, Dr. Goethel currently serves as a visiting assistant professor at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Leveraging her expertise in marine science and her passion for the ocean, she imparts essential knowledge to future leaders in the field.

An Early Interest in Marine Biology

As the youngest of her cousins and the only girl, Dr. Goethel felt out of place, and her grandfather struggled during their first meeting. When her grandfather asked her aunt for advice, she said to do the same thing for Dr. Goethel that he had done for her children: take her to the fishing docks. Ever since, she has felt drawn to the water.

During her time in middle and high school, Dr. Goethel found an opportunity to participate in a program called People to People, which led to a partnership with a Canadian student group called Students on Ice. Through this partnership, she was able to visit Iceland, Greenland, the Canadian Baffin Bay region and the Antarctic. Through these experiences, she fell in love with the northern waters.

Pursuing an Education

Inspired by her love for the ocean, her marine biologist aunt and her mother, Dr. Goethel chose to pursue an education in environmental science. She first completed a Bachelor of Arts in environmental science and policy at Smith College in 2013, then transitioned to the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science to earn a Master of Science in marine and estuarine environmental science in 2016 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 2021.

During her PhD program, Dr. Goethel became a teaching assistant and while she did not intend to be a teacher, she still enjoyed the experience. Following the completion of her doctorate in 2021, she served as an adjunct and earned a Fulbright Fellowship to teach in Iceland in 2022, which she considers to be her most notable achievement. Following this experience, she returned to the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science as a postdoc and then became a visiting assistant professor at St. Mary's College of Maryland.

Notable Creative Works

While a student at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, Dr. Goethel published several notable works, including "Implications of Ocean Acidification in the Pacific Arctic: Experimental Responses of Three Arctic Bivalves to Decreased pH and Food Availability" in 2017 and "Changes in Abundance and Biomass of the Bivalve Macoma Calcarea in the Northern Bering Sea and the Southeastern Chukchi Sea, 1998 to 2014, Tracked Through Dynamic Factor Analysis Models" in 2019. Additionally, she collaborated with Dr. Dawn Heimer on the book Determined to Be Extraordinary.

Ambition for the Future

Within the next five years, Dr. Goethel hopes to continue interacting more frequently with students. While she loves teaching, she eventually aims to prioritize one-on-one work and secure a tenure-track position. Ultimately, she wants to get students out into the field, whether on boats or visiting different countries.
