Holistic wellness tech company Pulsetto has released a new report into whether vagus nerve stimulation can affect changes in vision.

Stimulating the vagus nerve through low level electrical pulses has long been known to affect the body’s fight or flight reflex, creating a more relaxed state that positively impacts digestion, stress, and anxiety. In its latest piece, Pulsetto’s development team shares its findings on the potential effects that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) could have on vision.

Vision changes, such as double or blurred vision, affect more than 800,000 Americans adults every year. It is one of the most common reasons people go to the emergency room, creating a need for safe, at home treatments that could alleviate some of the strain on the healthcare system. Opticians report that vision changes can often be related to stress, anxiety, or issues with blood flow - all of which are symptoms which have shown improvements with VNS treatments during clinical trials.
As the longest cranial nerve in the body, the vagus nerve is responsible for a number of the body’s automatic reflexes, including some aspects of eye function. Pulsetto explains that when the nerve is overstimulated or damaged, this can lead to changes in blood pressure and heart rate. The company’s investigation examined whether these changes would also indirectly affect the flow of blood to the eyes and surrounding muscles creating changes in vision.
“During our research, we saw that altered blood flow to the eyes or brain can lead to symptoms such as blurred vision, light sensitivity, or even temporary vision loss in extreme cases,” said a spokesperson for Pulsetto. “On the flip side, stimulating the vagus nerve was shown to improve overall well-being, which could include vision health.”
Whilst the company stresses that VNS is “not a guaranteed fix” for vision issues, the research does show that the impact they have on the body can have an overall effect as part of a “holistic approach to health that can support the body’s natural healing processes”.
Vagus nerve stimulation using a quality device such as Pulsetto’s vagus nerve stimulator, which is FCC and CE certified, is considered safe for the majority of users. However, those with underlying health conditions, or who are experiencing problems with their vision, are advised to consult with a medical professional before using their VNS device.
