CC Vascular Medicine and Imaging Highlights Vascular Complications of Breast Cancer in Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — and at CC Vascular Medicine and Imaging, we’re shining a light on the vascular side of breast cancer care.

-- In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, CC Vascular Medicine and Imaging is bringing attention to an often-overlooked aspect of breast cancer: its impact on vascular health. Cancer and its treatments can cause complications in the veins and lymphatic system—most commonly lymphedema and blood clots.

Lymphedema

Lymphedema frequently occurs after lymph node removal or radiation therapy, when lymphatic fluid builds up in the arm, chest, or breast. Patients may experience swelling, pain, tightness, heaviness, and reduced range of motion, all of which can significantly affect daily life. Risk factors for lymphedema include: the number of lymph nodes removed, radiation therapy, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle. Early recognition and preventive strategies can reduce long-term complications, while maintenance care—including compression therapy, exercise, and imaging—helps patients manage symptoms effectively.

Blood Clots

Breast cancer itself, surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and implanted ports for chemotherapy delivery all increase the risk of blood clots. Clots may form in the legs (deep vein thrombosis), arms, or chest veins, and in some cases, they may travel to the lungs as a pulmonary embolism. Symptoms of a blood clot may include pain, swelling of a limb, chest pain, shortness of breath, or a rapid heart rate. Any of these signs should be evaluated urgently. Early imaging, risk assessment, and preventive care are essential to keeping patients safe. “At CC Vascular Medicine and Imaging, our mission is to detect and treat these complications early and provide ongoing care for patients at risk,” said Dr. Carmel Celestin, Owner of CC Vascular Medicine and Imaging. “Awareness and proactive management of vascular health are key to improving the safety and quality of life of breast cancer patients.”

Commitment

CC Vascular Medicine and Imaging is dedicated to prevention, early detection, and long-term maintenance care for patients facing vascular complications related to breast cancer and its treatment.
