Hercules Designs, a studio known focused on user-centric app development, is taking on manipulative messaging with a new app designed to improve critical thinking.

-- Hercules Designs has expanded its suite of in-house designed apps with MindShield, a new critical thinking app aimed at helping people become more resistant to manipulative messaging by teaching them how to recognize common persuasion techniques.

The company developed the app to help users recognize the often-unnoticed persuasive tactics found in headlines, advertisements, social media posts, political statements, sales messages, and other forms of everyday communication. MindShield is neutral, non-partisan, and intended to make those tactics easier to recognize so users can assess messages with greater awareness.
“MindShield isn’t about telling people what conclusions to reach,” says Hercules Juver, owner and creator of Hercules Designs. “It’s about helping them recognize what’s happening in a message so they can make that decision for themselves.”
The app includes a library of short educational lessons covering techniques such as fear appeals, cherry picking, false dilemmas, social proof, loaded language, scarcity, confirmation bias, and emotional manipulation. The lessons use examples to show how these methods appear in situations people may encounter in everyday life.
MindShield’s Shield Check feature takes that concept further with AI-assisted analysis. Users can submit a message or statement and receive an explanation of the persuasive methods it contains. The feature does not attempt to determine whether the statement is factually correct; instead, it points out the techniques being used and provides questions that users can consider when evaluating the message.
The app also includes interactive scenarios through Survival Mode, giving users opportunities to identify persuasive tactics in simulated situations.
Much of the learning material can also be accessed offline, allowing users to use the educational features without a constant internet connection.
In terms of user experience, Hercules Designs said the app reflects a broader philosophy behind its digital products. Rather than designing applications around prolonged engagement, frequent spending, or other metrics that benefit the developer, the company aims to create tools with a defined purpose and practical value for the people using them.
“A unifying theme across our products is clarity, as our goal is for the user to accomplish what they set out to do, not keep them pinned to their screens needlessly,” Hercules Juver added.
The app is available now through the Apple App Store and Google Play.
