UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESSWIRE / January 14, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors Angela D. Blanchard for excellence in nursing. Ms. Blanchard earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, in 1998. As a nurse consultant for the LA County Department of Public Health, she has dedicated her career to improving community health outcomes, especially in tuberculosis control.
The Discovery of a Passion-Driven Career
Ms. Blanchard's nursing career began in the high-pressure environment of a medical-surgical unit at a bustling hospital. While this early experience was invaluable, the intense demands affected her health. After transitioning to home health nursing, Ms. Blanchard realized the role was too isolating.
Afterward, Ms. Blanchard found her true calling at a women's hospital. During her tenure, she worked in a gynecological unit and became passionate about lactation support.
"I fell in love with lactation, helping moms breastfeed and seeing that they were always so grateful," Ms. Blanchard said. "When you're struggling from postpartum, you're in pain and your baby's crying; it was really rewarding when I could help those babies."
As her children grew, Ms. Blanchard sought more predictable hours and joined the public health unit in 2006. This career shift allowed her to work across diverse programs, including tuberculosis, immunizations, reproductive health and children's special health services.
By 2013, Ms. Blanchard was serving as a regional tuberculosis nurse, and in 2018, she transitioned to her current role as a nurse consultant.
An Advocate for Tuberculosis Education and Prevention
In her current position, Ms. Blanchard plays a critical role in the fight against tuberculosis. Her day-to-day work involves developing training modules for public health nurses across the state, conducting in-person and virtual training sessions, and participating in organizations such as the National Tuberculosis Coalition of America. Ms. Blanchard's efforts have been instrumental in improving tuberculosis education and awareness within the health care community.
One of Ms. Blanchard's key initiatives is helping Louisiana establish its tuberculosis center of excellence to train and educate staff.
"We're going to make it both in-person and online," she explains.
The Role of Faith, Family and Mentors
Ms. Blanchard's impact on the nursing field has gained recognition. In 2017, she was named Nurse of the Year for Public Health.
Additionally, during her time in lactation services, Ms. Blanchard earned the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (BCLC) credential. The rigorous study required to earn the certification highlights her drive for professional growth.
Throughout her career, Ms. Blanchard has credited her success to her faith, family and mentors.
"I can do nothing without God in my life," she said. "I start my mornings every single day with prayer and reading."
Ms. Blanchard's late husband, Steven, supported her early career, and her current husband, Clyde, continues to stand by her side. She also acknowledges the guidance of close colleagues, including Ericka Broussard, APRN, and Heather Manirque, who have been instrumental in her professional Journey.
A Devotion to Improving Lives
Outside work, Ms. Blanchard enjoys spending time with her family, walking her dog and cooking. She is also involved in civic work through her church and participates in programs for prisoners.
Ms. Blanchard aims further to enhance the effectiveness of the tuberculosis control program. In approximately seven years, she plans to retire, marking the culmination of a fulfilling career.
Ms. Blanchard's contributions to the nursing profession range from her beginnings on a busy hospital floor to her current role as a leader in public health. During her career, a common thread has been her commitment to improving the lives of others.
