Kanagawa Institute of Technology and NII eliminate conventional NFV traffic hairpinning, processing trans-Pacific 8K uncompressed streams (24-48 Gbps) in real time over SINET6 and SCinet, with open-source software routing and IETF SPRING WG.

CHICAGO - Oct. 31, 2026 - PRLog -- At SC26 in Chicago, the Kanagawa Institute of Technology (KAIT), with the National Institute of Informatics (NII) and partners, will demonstrate 400 Gbps 8K uncompressed video processing via SRv6 in-network computing across a trans-Pacific network connecting Japan and the United States. This live setup showcases how integrated networking and computing support ultra-high-bandwidth media without traffic hairpinning or architectural bottlenecks.

Overcoming Hairpinning in Beyond 5G Infrastructure
As Beyond 5G (B5G) approaches, demand for real-time creation and distribution of high-quality media scales exponentially. Low-latency, high-bandwidth networks are essential to enhance immediacy and interactivity. Supporting 8K uncompressed video streams requiring 24 to 48 Gbps per stream led KAIT to pioneer a high-speed inline computing architecture for wide-area environments.

Processing massive continuous data streams via software relies on frameworks like Virtualized Video Handling Functions (VVF) on Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK). However, conventional NFV and Service Function Chaining (SFC) deployments suffer from traffic hairpinning and latency overheads due to reliance on intermediate proxies.

SRv6 End.AN and Open-Source Software Routing
KAIT's approach leverages SRv6 End.AN, a data-plane behavior currently undergoing standardization in the IETF SPRING Working Group ("SRv6 SFC Architecture with SR-aware Functions").

By integrating packet forwarding and computational processing within intermediate routers, End.AN executes processing directly along the optimized forwarding path. High-speed operations and routing are supported by KAIT's open-source, DPDK-based SRv6 software router, eliminating detours and drastically reducing end-to-end processing latency.

Live 400 Gbps International Demonstration at SC26
At SC26, KAIT and research teams will validate this architecture across an international testbed, exhibiting at NII Booth (#1459). Technical highlights include:

* Trans-Pacific 400 Gbps Connectivity: Testing the DPDK-based SRv6 software router at line rate via SCinet and SINET6.
* Dynamic SFC: Multiple VVFs for 8K uncompressed streams—color conversion, switching, format conversion, and captioning—are dynamically chained across distributed SRv6 End.AN nodes.
* Diverse Video Sources: Aggregating live streams from 8K cameras in Ginoza (Okinawa), KAIT outdoor cameras over local 5G (Kanagawa), and an NICT video server.
* Real-Time Visibility: Visualizing 400 Gbps packet conditions, path states, and compute resource utilization in real time.
* Dedicated Testbed Allocation: Four L2VPNs over SINET6 via NII booth: VLAN #1 (50 Gbps SRv6 8K), VLAN #2 (50 Gbps SMPTE ST-2110 8K), VLAN #3 (<=1 Gbps Control/Management), and VLAN #4 (<=1 Gbps Monitoring).

Future Outlook
Following SC26, the team plans to refine the SRv6 End.AN platform, deepening synergy between computing functions and packet forwarding to accelerate practical deployment in data centers.
