A Tribe for Jazz, a visionary Columbus, Ohio–based nonprofit, proudly announces the appointment of bassist and composer Tyrone Allen II as one of two dynamic Artists-in-Residence for its groundbreaking 2024 Columbus International Jazz Series running through September 2024. A highly sought-after artist with a rapidly rising national profile, Allen’s appointment as National Artist-in-Residence underscores A Tribe for Jazz’s unwavering commitment to fostering emerging talent and enriching the cultural landscape of our community. Fellow bassist George DeLancey, a Cambridge, Ohio native, is our Local Artist-in-Residence, spearheading his own inspired slate of performances under the ATFJ Festival banner.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic to be a part of this program,” says Allen. “A Tribe for Jazz has been wonderful to work with—I can only dream of where we’ll go from here!” Allen kicks off his half of the festival in August with performances from his accomplished quartet as well as his electronically oriented solo project TY.000 (pronounced “Ty-Thousand”). Allen will also collaborate with two exceptional emerging talents, pianist Miki Yamanaka and tenor saxophonist Kaz George, both of whom have been refining their artistry alongside Allen over the years.

The Tyrone Allen II Quartet (TAIIQ) is a jazz group with an avant-pop mentality. The quartet will be playing Allen’s original songs as well as a selection of new and old songs he loves. His innovative project TY.000 masterfully blends the rich nuances of 20th-century Black American music with the cutting-edge aesthetics of 21st-century dance music, crafting an inclusive sonic journey that resonates deeply with contemporary audiences and invites them to experience jazz in new and unexpected ways. Whether you are a musician or not, the music is meant to make your body move while broadening your expectations as a listener. Sampler, synthesizer, upright bass, beat manipulation, singing as well: Allen does it all as TY.000, making what he calls “experimental popular music,” engaging all facets of his musicianship and musical taste.

“Rising stars like Tyrone Allen II embody the transformative power of jazz, driving the genre’s evolution while pushing artistic boundaries,” says Stephanie Matthews, Executive Director of A Tribe for Jazz. “Our mission is to propel the future of jazz forward by nurturing and spotlighting exceptional talent, ensuring that this powerful art form continues to resonate and inspire across generations.”
