Mojo Vision Expands Advisory Board by Adding Dr. Waguih Ishak

Photonics pioneer to provide guidance on technology and product roadmap for optical interconnects in AI data centers

Mojo Vision, the high-performance micro-LED platform company, today announced the appointment of Dr. Waguih Ishak to its advisory board. Mojo Vision is applying its advanced micro-LED technology towards the development of high-speed optical interconnects for AI infrastructure. The addition of Dr. Ishak to the board will bring decades of leadership experience in photonics and optoelectronics to support the company’s efforts.

Today’s announcement builds on the news of Mojo's recent $75M Series B funding and positions the company to deploy its technology across high-growth markets, including AI data centers and next-generation AI glasses.

With a career spanning five decades at some of the world’s most influential technology companies, few names carry as much weight in the field as Dr. Ishak. He has held senior leadership roles that have shaped the industry’s trajectory, including vice president and chief technologist at Corning for 16 years, vice president and chief technology officer of Avago Technologies (Broadcom), and nearly three decades as vice president and director of the Photonics Research Lab at Agilent/HP, where he led breakthrough advances that set new standards in the field.

Dr. Ishak has also shaped the next generation of engineers as an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University, where he founded the Stanford Photonics Research Center (SPRC) in 1999. His contributions have been recognized worldwide, earning him the distinction of IEEE Life Fellow and election to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK), and the Royal Society of Canada’s Academy of Sciences. Dr. Ishak received the IEEE Photonics Society Industry Achievement Award in 2024 for “enduring, transformational and strategic global leadership in the development, promotion, and introduction of photonic products including commercial VCSELs and the computer laser mouse.”

“Mojo Vision’s micro-LED platform represents one of the most exciting opportunities I have seen in my decades of photonics innovation,” said Dr. Ishak. “The ability to apply this technology to optical interconnects for AI infrastructure is especially compelling. It has the potential to redefine performance standards in optical interconnects, particularly as AI applications continue to push the boundaries of traditional data center architectures.”

Dr. Ishak joins fellow advisory board member Dr. Rajeeva Lahri, a distinguished veteran of the Semiconductor Industry with a proven track record of introducing new technologies to the market, along with representatives from Mojo Vision’s strategic customers, further strengthening the company’s foundation of experience and expertise. “Advisory boards are critical for guiding companies through pivotal technology and market transitions,” said Dr. Lahri. “Adding a visionary leader like Dr. Ishak amplifies Mojo Vision’s credibility and strengthens its ability to scale its platform into the markets that need it most.”

“Dr. Ishak’s decision to join our advisory board is a resounding endorsement and validation of Mojo’s vision and technology from one of the most respected pioneers in photonics,” said Mojo Vision chief executive officer Dr. Nikhil Balram. “His legendary track record and global reputation will be a powerful catalyst as we scale our technology into large AI markets and unlock its full potential.”

“Waguih’s insight and experience have the power to supercharge our work in optical interconnects, one of the critical enablers of next-generation AI infrastructure,” added Mojo Vision chief technology officer, Dr. Mike Wiemer. “His guidance will be invaluable as we push the boundaries of performance and innovation to redefine what’s possible with our cutting-edge micro-LED platform.”

“Welcoming Dr. Ishak to the advisory board is a landmark moment for Mojo Vision,” said Dr. Achin Bhowmik, Mojo Vision board member, currently chief technology officer and executive vice president of engineering at Starkey, and former vice president and general manager of perceptual computing at Intel. “Few individuals have shaped the field of photonics as profoundly as he has, and his reputation and pioneering contributions will amplify Mojo’s leadership while accelerating our mission to transform industries with our micro-LED platform.”
