Coach Todd Campbell, a U.S. Army veteran and longtime football coach, is speaking out about the urgent need to support U.S. veterans and local community programs. Drawing from his own journey—from the sidelines of Texas football to military service after 9/11—Campbell says the time to act is now.
“Serving in the Army after 9/11 changed my life forever,” Campbell said. “I came back with scars, but also with perspective. I know firsthand how much veterans sacrifice, and how much they need support when they return home.”
The Challenge Facing Veterans
Today, more than 18 million veterans live in the United States, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Nearly 1 in 10 veterans experience homelessness, and data shows that around 30% of post-9/11 veterans struggle with mental health conditions such as PTSD and depression.
“These are not just numbers,” Campbell explained. “They represent men and women who stood up for all of us. Now it’s our turn to stand up for them.”
Giving Back Through Local Action
Campbell regularly volunteers at food pantries and homeless shelters that target U.S. veterans. He believes the solutions start close to home.
“Not everyone can run a national program. But everyone can do something. Donate food. Volunteer a few hours a month. Reach out to a veteran you know and just listen,” he said.
Research backs this up. Studies show that communities with active local volunteer support programs reduce veteran homelessness by up to 50%. Simple actions, like mentorship, transportation assistance, and job referrals, make a lasting difference.
The Coach’s Call to Action
Campbell sees his work on and off the field as connected. “In football, you win by working as a team. In life, it’s no different. If we come together—neighbors, churches, schools, businesses—we can change lives.”
He also encourages young people to get involved. “When high school players volunteer alongside me, they realize it’s about more than football. It’s about being a citizen, a teammate in your community.”
What People Can Do
-
Volunteer locally. Look for food banks, shelters, and veteran outreach programs in your area.
-
Donate supplies. Simple items like socks, jackets, and canned food go a long way.
-
Offer your skills. Tutoring, résumé help, and transportation are invaluable to veterans transitioning back into civilian life.
-
Check in. Sometimes, a conversation is the most powerful support you can give.
Campbell’s message is clear: “Big change doesn’t start in Washington—it starts in your neighborhood. Every effort counts. If you’ve got two hours, give two hours. If you’ve got five dollars, give five dollars. Together, we can honor our veterans not just with words, but with action.”
