Rev. Dr. Donnie L. Smith Announces Upcoming Scholarly Book on History, Theology, and Cultural Memory

UNITED STATES – Rev. Dr. Donnie L. Smith announces the forthcoming release of his book, They Not Like Us: Trying to Silence the Voices of Black America, scheduled for publication in 2026. The book offers a scholarly examination of how history, theology, and cultural memory intersect within the American experience.

The work presents a historical and theological analysis of how narratives are formed, preserved, and transmitted through educational systems, religious institutions, and cultural traditions. Drawing on academic research and theological reflection, Dr. Smith explores how collective memory develops over time and how historical contributions are documented and interpreted across generations.

Dr. Smith holds a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts in Christian Education from Virginia Union University’s Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, as well as a Doctor of Ministry from Liberty University’s John Rawlings School of Divinity. His academic training emphasizes theological inquiry, religious education, and historical analysis.

The manuscript examines historical case studies related to innovation, scholarship, and cultural development, highlighting how recognition of contributions often evolves gradually. The book approaches these topics from an educational and analytical perspective, emphasizing historical context and documented impact rather than contemporary debate.

A dedicated section of the book focuses on the historical role of religious institutions in community development, education, and leadership. Dr. Smith traces how faith-based organizations have contributed to social structure, learning, and moral formation throughout different periods of American history.

The book also includes an overview of cultural exchange in literature, media, and the arts, exploring how creative traditions have influenced one another across time. This analysis is presented within a broad historical framework, emphasizing documentation, attribution, and the evolution of cultural expression.

Biblical references, primarily from the King James Version, are integrated throughout the text to support theological reflection on themes such as truth, justice, stewardship, and historical remembrance. Scripture is used as a scholarly lens rather than a political or ideological tool.

Drawing on decades of ministry leadership and academic study, Dr. Smith’s work reflects a sustained engagement with theology, history, and education. They Not Like Us: Trying to Silence the Voices of Black America represents his most comprehensive scholarly project to date.

The book will be available in 2026. Additional publication details will be announced closer to the release date.
