While mulberry silk has long been coveted for its texture and lustre, it is also notable because of its relatively low environmental impact. According to Mayfairsilk, silk production produces 34 kg of carbon dioxide per tonne of fabric, compared to 27,680 kg of carbon dioxide for an equivalent amount of cotton. Additionally, mulberry trees, which are the main food source of silkworms, require no pesticides or chemical fertilisers to grow and are sustained solely by rainwater, resulting in less water use and pollution than cotton, wool, rayon, and polyester production.
Silk has also been extensively researched for its health and cosmetic benefits, and many studies have shown that the fabric can reduce signs of ageing. This is because silk does not absorb as much moisture as cotton and other materials, allowing the skin and hair to retain their natural oils. Moreover, pure silk has antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties and is highly resistant to dust mites - ideal for individuals with allergies and skin conditions.
Mayfairsilk’s Peach Dreams pillowcase is woven from grade 6A mulberry silk and has a momme rating of 25, indicating a higher density of silk per square of fabric. Consequently, the pillowcase is more durable than products with lower momme ratings. Furthermore, the company makes each pillowcase from long-fibre silk, which is effective at minimising friction during sleep and preventing the formation of skin creases and hair tangles.
All of Mayfairsilk’s products, including the Peach Dreams pillowcase, are Certified Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, demonstrating that they have been subjected to rigorous testing and determined to contain no toxic dyes, formaldehydes, or other harsh chemicals. The pillowcase is completely biodegradable as a result, and it can be composted at the end of its life.
