Rice Hydro, Inc. Supports Student Welders on the World Stage

Nevada-Based Manufacturer Donates Critical Tool to Utah State University Eastern for International Welding Competition.

-- Carson City, Nev. - Rice Hydro, Inc., a leading manufacturer of hydrostatic test pumps based in Carson City, Nevada, is proud to support Utah State University Eastern (USU Eastern) and student welder Ben Cornaby as they compete for the right to represent the United States on the world stage in the prestigious WorldSkills International Welding Competition.

Cornaby recently earned first place at the 2025 WorldSkills USA National Championship held in Atlanta, Georgia. With this victory, the USU Eastern team now moves into the international qualification phase, where they will fabricate and test pressure vessels under strict global standards.

To support this effort, Rice Hydro donated an MTP-15-3GT Manual Hand Operated Hydrostatic Test Pump, a vital piece of equipment used to pressure test vessels at up to 1,200 psi. This contribution not only helps with competition readiness but also enhances hands-on training for welding students at USU Eastern.

“The pump has made pressure testing our vessels so much faster and easier,” said Jeremiah Garcia, welding instructor at USU Eastern. “It’s a great learning tool for all our welding students. Since receiving the Rice Hydro Test Pump, we’ve even started experimenting with hydroforming—we recently created a giant baseball sculpture for our local baseball field.”

USU Eastern has now claimed the collegiate national title three consecutive years. Cornaby won in 2024 and 2025, following Wyatt Hansen, who captured the title in 2023 and went on to win bronze at the 2024 WorldSkills Olympics in Lyon, France—competing against 42 of the top welders from around the globe.

If the team succeeds in the ongoing international trials, USU Eastern will represent the United States at the 2026 WorldSkills Olympics in Shanghai, China—a global event featuring over 1,400 skilled vocational competitors from more than 80 countries.
