About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

New AI Platform Tackles Healthcare's $12.7B Workplace Violence Crisis with First-of-Its-Kind Risk Assessment, Compliance Tool

OPTICS for Healthcare launches comprehensive software solution to address epidemic taking a daily toll on nurses and support staff across America's largest employment sector

PHOENIX, AZ, August 14, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- OPTICS for Healthcare today announced the launch of the industry's first AI-driven workplace violence assessment and risk mitigation platform specifically designed for healthcare environments. The comprehensive software solution addresses a crisis costing the U.S. healthcare system at least $12.7 billion annually.

Healthcare workers face workplace violence at five times the rate of private industry employees, with more than 2,000 nurses and nursing assistants experiencing physical violence during their shifts every day. Each staff-involved incident requiring medical treatment costs an average of $32,000, while staff turnover costs can be up to $82,000 to recruit and onboard a new registered nurse. Legal settlements average $800,000 to $1.2 million per case.

"Healthcare workers dedicate their lives to healing others, yet they face unprecedented safety challenges that compromise both their wellbeing and patient care," said David Brake, Co-founder and CEO of OPTICS for Healthcare. "Our platform provides healthcare organizations with the systematic, evidence-based tools necessary to create safer work environments while maintaining regulatory compliance."

The OPTICS platform combines artificial intelligence with "humans in the loop" across five integrated components:

1. A comprehensive "current state" workplace assessment
2. A GAP analysis report that highlights current state vs. future state
3. A collaborative workflow management system that uses AI to generate facility-specific policies and playbooks
4. A peer-reviewed critical content library that also includes real-time regulatory updates
5. A management dashboard where organization leaders can access status updates and view detailed analytics

Product pilots will begin this fall and focus on client implementation, user experience, and the efficacy of OPTICS' integrated components.

"The goal of these pilots is to ensure that OPTICS is an easy-to-use platform that delivers on its promise to improve staff safety, reduce liability exposure, enhance regulatory compliance, and decrease turnover, while in turn, working to increase the quality of patient care," said Kim Urbanek, OPTICS Co-founder and Chief of Innovation & Practice. "We're excited to be able to impact the healthcare industry in such a meaningful way."

The nationwide release of the OPTICS platform is targeted for early 2026. The platform is designed to serve healthcare's entire ecosystem, including 6,100 U.S. hospitals, 30,600 assisted living facilities, 15,000 skilled nursing facilities, and 190,000 physician practice groups.
