About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Midway, Utah Army Veteran Wins the Grand Prize at the 2024 Chanticleer International Book Awards

Midway, Utah Army Veteran Wins the Grand Prize at the 2024 Chanticleer International Book Awards

The second time was a charm for 28-year US Army veteran and Midway, Utah resident Ralph R. “Rick” Steinke. In 2023 his first novel, the high stakes global thriller Major Jake Fortina and the Tier One Threat was a semi-finalist at the annual Chanticleer International Book Awards (the CIBAs) held in Bellingham, Washington. But on April 20, 2024, with about 130 authors present from several countries as far away as Australia, India, and New Zealand, his second book in the Jake Fortina series—Jake Fortina and the Roman Conspiracy—took the Grand Prize in the Global Thriller-High Stakes category.

When asked about receiving the Grand Prize award, Steinke said, “It’s not exactly something I was expecting. I was already thrilled that Jake Fortina and the Roman Conspiracy was named as a Finalist going into the event. And then when it was named as a First-Place finisher, I couldn’t believe it and I was very grateful. But then to hear my name announced immediately after ‘And the Grand Prize winner is’…well, that was a positively surreal experience.”

The Jake Fortina series is based on a US Army officer who after undergoing combat deployments, professional challenges, and personal tragedy, finds himself serving as a US military attaché at the US embassies in Paris and Rome. Steinke’s first Jake Fortina book, Major Jake Fortina and the Tier One Threat, has Fortina finding himself drafted by US embassy Paris FBI officials as well as local French law enforcement and intelligence officials to help counter an evolving grave threat directed by Iran against US, Israeli, and Jewish citizens around the world.

In his Grand Prize-winning book, Lieutenant Colonel Jake Fortina—along with his Italian Carabinieri wife—finds himself stationed at the US embassy in Rome. Here, Fortina must face a complex threat originating from a runaway Russian oligarch who in essence wants to take over from Russia’s president and ominously threaten the United States, Italy, and NATO. Fortina’s supporting cast includes a US Army sergeant and a Ukrainian colonel. The high stakes, high speed novel also expertly weaves together threads including Italian organized crime, Russian soldiers of fortune, a simmering US embassy domestic threat, and cyber misinformation.
