North Fish USA Inc. Recalls Cold Smoked Capelin Due to Potential Botulism Risk

Hallandale, FL - North Fish USA Inc. is voluntarily recalling certain packages of “Cold Smoked Capelin” due to the potential for contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause life-threatening botulism.

The recalled product is the 9-ounce package of “Cold Smoked Capelin” with UPC code 4811527003360 and best before dates of 07.13.2024 and 01.05.2025. The product was distributed in New York and Georgia.

Patriot Foods identified the potential for contamination during a routine inspection by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors, followed by further analysis by the Food Laboratory staff.

The FDA urges consumers who have purchased this product to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Do not consume the product, even if it does not appear spoiled.

"This recall serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent quality control measures in the food industry. Consumers rely on food manufacturers to ensure the safety of their products. When such a serious health risk is identified, swift and decisive action is crucial to protect public health," said Anthony Albert, general manager at Legal Giant. 

Botulism can cause serious health problems, including paralysis and respiratory failure.

As a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, it can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double vision, and trouble with speaking or swallowing.

Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension, and constipation may also be common symptoms.

If you experience any of these symptoms after consuming this product, seek immediate medical attention.

To date, no illnesses related to this issue have been reported.

Consumers who have purchased imported 9-ounce packages of North Fish USA “Cold Smoked Capelin" are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The FDA is working closely with the company to investigate this recall and ensure the safety of the food supply.
