About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Improbable Champions by Stephen Newman – A True Underdog Story That Will Stir the Soul

Improbable Champions by Stephen Newman - A True Underdog Story That Will Stir the Soul

In a world that often celebrates flashy wins and natural-born talent, Improbable Champions by Stephen Newman is a powerful reminder that true greatness is built on grit, discipline, and unity. This deeply moving memoir transports readers to the small-town spirit of Grants Pass, Oregon, during a transformative period in American history—and tells the story of a group of teenage boys who defied expectations and found something greater than victory on the football field.

About the Book

Improbable Champions is more than just a sports story—it's a coming-of-age narrative rooted in resilience and heart. Set in the 1960s, the book follows a group of high school football players who come together from humble beginnings to build a championship-caliber team. Under the leadership of a coach who believed in character over celebrity, these young men learned to dig deep, support one another, and push past their limits—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally.

Stephen Newman’s storytelling vividly captures the intensity of fall practices, the nervous energy before Friday night games, and the emotional highs and lows of one unforgettable football season that shaped the lives of those who played. With themes of brotherhood, perseverance, and community, this memoir reflects on how sports can teach life lessons that echo far beyond the scoreboard.

From quiet locker room moments to game-changing plays on the field, readers are invited to witness the journey of young men becoming more than athletes—they become leaders, role models, and, above all, a family.

About the Author

Stephen Newman was born in 1947 in Grants Pass, Oregon. His love for football began in early childhood and led him to play organized football from the age of 11. After a promising start to his college football career, a dislocated shoulder cut his playing days short. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968, Newman flew to Vietnam on his 21st birthday, an experience that shaped his resilience and worldview.

After completing his military service, he earned his degree and returned to his roots, teaching for five years at Grants Pass High School. He later transitioned into a successful career in media sales and played a key role in launching Home and Garden Television (HGTV). Newman retired in 2021 and lives in Knoxville, Tennessee, with his wife of over 50 years. Together, they enjoy life with their four children and ten grandchildren.
