About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Timothy Lubniewski Urges New Respect for Trades and Blue-Collar Leadership

Paving Industry Veteran Uses Recent Interview Feature to Advocate for Change

STATEN ISLAND, NY / ACCESS Newswire / October 15, 2025 / Timothy D. Lubniewski, General Manager at Rose Paving LLC and former owner of one of the Northeast's most respected paving firms, is using his recent spotlight interview to call for a national shift in how America values trade workers, blue-collar leadership, and vocational career paths.

Lubniewski, who started his first business at age 23 with little more than a truck, a crew, and a strong work ethic, was featured this week in a 700-word industry profile titled "Timothy Lubniewski: From Staten Island Streets to Industry Success." The piece traces his journey from local construction start-up to leadership in the nation's largest private commercial paving maintenance company.

But beyond personal achievements, Lubniewski wants to focus attention on a broader issue: the growing shortage of skilled trade workers-and the outdated perceptions holding the industry back.

"Trades shouldn't be seen as a fallback," Lubniewski said in the interview. "There's strategy, pride, and leadership in this work. People just need to hear those stories more often."

Labour Crisis in the Skilled Trades

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's 2024 Construction Index, 88% of contractors reported moderate to severe difficulty in finding skilled workers. The National Association of Home Builders adds that 77% of builders cite labour shortages as a top concern. And the average age of skilled trade workers in the U.S. is now over 43, with younger generations entering the field at much lower rates than previous decades.

"This isn't just a workforce problem," said Lubniewski. "It's a mindset problem. Too many schools steer kids toward debt-heavy degrees and away from honest, rewarding, hands-on work."

Leadership from the Ground Up

The feature article details Lubniewski's journey from founding companies like Stream-N-Stone and Paving Arts Corp, to growing a regional business through quality work, hands-on leadership, and reinvestment in people and tools.

"You don't have to be the loudest guy in the room," he said. "When your workers ask for your advice, when they call you a friend-that's when you know you're leading."

After selling his business to Rose Paving, Lubniewski stayed on to help lead national operations. He now uses that platform to elevate not just paving practices, but the value of blue-collar leadership in modern business.

A Call to Action: Rethink Success

Lubniewski isn't asking for headlines or handouts-he's asking for a mindset shift from the public, business leaders, educators, and parents.

"Let's reframe what success looks like," he said. "It's not just about degrees or titles. It's about showing up, learning a skill, and taking pride in what you build."

What You Can Do

This is not just a trade industry issue-it's a national one. The future of infrastructure, housing, logistics, and local economies depends on rebuilding the trade workforce and raising its profile.

Here's how individuals can help:

  • Talk to young people about career options in the trades.

  • Support vocational programmes in schools and communities.

  • Highlight the value of builders, repairers, and technicians in your networks.

  • Mentor or connect with people entering blue-collar fields.

  • Rethink hiring bias - prioritise work ethic and leadership over prestige.

"There's always an answer," Lubniewski said. "You just have to stay at it long enough to find it."
