A Fascination with Materials Science

Ms. Reynolds' interest in airplanes and aerospace began in high school when she researched space and flight for a school report. During a visit to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, she witnessed a demonstration of explosive forming that ignited her interest in materials science. Her grandfather's enthusiasm for aircraft also helped guide her career choice.

This early passion remained through college. Throughout college, Ms. Reynolds pursued internships in the aerospace field, including Spirit AeroSystems. After graduating, Ms. Reynolds joined Spirit AeroSystems full-time and has accumulated approximately 14 years of experience at the company.

Professional Growth in Aerospace

Ms. Reynolds has been working in the aerospace industry for more than a decade. Most of her professional experience has been with Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, Kansas, where she gained early exposure to materials testing and engineering processes when she joined the company as an intern. In 2010, she became a full-time engineer.

In 2021, Ms. Reynolds accepted a role as director of quality, engineering and estimating at Dynamic NC in Rose Hill, expanding her knowledge of quality assurance and management. After two years, she returned to Spirit AeroSystems as a metallurgical engineer in Materials and Processes. In this role, she focuses on defense projects. "As I've done more defense stuff, I've seen how the things we do impact national safety and security," she says.

A Focus on Human and National Safety

Ms. Reynolds' work involves reviewing engineering drawings, approving special processes and collaborating with suppliers, supply chain professionals and quality teams. However, much of her focus centers around safety.

On the commercial side of the industry, Ms. Reynolds understands how an aircraft's quality directly impacts passenger safety. She has expanded that perspective to include national security in her current defense role. "I care about what goes on the structures we build," she says.

Each decision Ms. Reynolds makes involving materials and processes carries weight. As a result, she approaches her work with integrity and accountability. "I always have that in the back of my mind, ‘Would I feel comfortable putting my family on this plane?'" she says.

Career and Academic Highlights

One of Ms. Reynolds' most significant accomplishments has been her contribution to a new defense program. After early design requirements were met, the venture went on to reach production and complete many significant milestones.

Ms. Reynolds' academic foundation includes earning a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 2009 and a master's degree in operations management from Friends University in 2012. She credits professors and mentors with encouraging her to persevere through challenges and inspiring her to take chances with new opportunities.

Personal Commitments and Future Goals

Outside her professional work, Ms. Reynolds is a mother of two and takes pride in mentoring young professionals interested in engineering. This endeavor reflects her commitment to helping others in the industry grow in their careers.

Ms. Reynolds is reassessing her future goals at Spirit AeroSystems amid Boeing's acquisition. Meanwhile, she has been pursuing the company's technical fellowship program, which is the highest technical role available. Despite the program's uncertain future, she remains focused on enhancing her technical skills and contributing to aerospace engineering.
