Funding advances one internationally harmonized hazardous drug list and expanded Medicinal Hazard Data Sheets, as the 84th FIP World Congress convenes in Montréal

MONTRÉAL, QC / ACCESS Newswire / August 31, 2026 / Pharmacy Stars, BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), EQUASHIELD and EuroBioConcept have collectively made $100,000 available to launch the Medicinal Hazard Data Standardization Consortium (MHDSC), a voluntary, nonprofit global collaboration developing standardized Medicinal Hazard Data Sheets (MHDS).

The funding answers a documented gap. Hazardous drug classification remains fragmented across the NIOSH list, USP General Chapter <800>, ISOPP standards and European directives - frameworks that diverge in scope, definition and enforceability. The burden of toxicological assessment therefore falls to individual hospitals and pharmacies, few of which are resourced to evaluate newly approved agents independently. National lists also lag pharmaceutical innovation, leaving protection gaps that vary by border. Conventional safety data sheets, written for industrial handling, seldom address compounding, administration or patient waste.

MHDSC will maintain an open, consensus-governed framework for identifying, classifying and communicating the occupational, environmental and clinical hazards of medicinal compounds across their lifecycle. All outputs are developed independently of commercial influence and made freely available.

The announcement coincides with the opening of the 84th FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Montréal, 30 August - 2 September 2026, convened under the theme "One Health, One Pharmacy - Bridging science, practice and education." On September 1, Dr. Christine Roussel and Dr. Jackie Jaskowiak will present "Towards One Internationally Harmonized Hazardous Drug List: Bridging Science, Practice and Global Regulatory Frameworks."
