About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Lafarge Expands Performance Portfolio With Dynamax High Performance Concrete

Following a 60-year history as Canada’s concrete experts, Lafarge announces the launch of Dynamax, a new global high performance concrete across Canada. “It’s the next step to make sure that we provide solutions for Canadian construction,” explains Brad Kohl, CEO & President of Lafarge Canada in Western Canada.

High performance concrete (HPC) meets unique and demanding performance and uniformity requirements that aren’t achieved through conventional concrete. As an engineered concrete product, Dynamax leverages Lafarge’s proprietary technologies, like its self consolidating concrete and other performance enhancements. “Each Dynamax product is designed through a careful selection of the specialized constituents required, and then undergoes substantial testing requirements to ensure that we are achieving the performance we need,” explains Prez Skiba, Vice President & General Manager, Ready Mix at Lafarge.

Meant for demanding projects, including bridges, arenas, hospitals and extreme high-rises, incorporating Dynamax into structural design creates the potential to build with less materials. “Designers can now consider concrete designs more frequently as an alternative to steel in large-scale, complex, or creative projects. The product allows designers and architects to maximize durability and life cycle, as well as efficiency, without increasing resource usage - essentially, building more with less,” he explains.

The potential for environmental impacts is significant. Dynamax’s strength, durability, and constructability mean a designer can actually use less concrete and more compact reinforcement when designing their structure. Fewer beams and columns, and reducing the thickness of slabs provide design advantages, but beyond that, reduced use of CO2 emitting cementitious materials. Add to that, the easy access to concrete over steel within Canada - thanks to Lafarge’s coast to coast network - and constructors will see even further reductions in their GHG emissions.

“We know the trends in Canadian construction,” comments David Redfern,CEO & President of Lafarge Canada in Eastern Canada. “Whether it’s the advance planning for population growth and megacities, or the essential need to build sustainably, HPC is designed to maximize the opportunity to meet those new goals.”

Dynamax meets all Canadian building code requirements, and is available across Canada. “Dynamax gives the building designer even more flexibility to their approach - using a higher performing concrete to envelop denser, more compact steel reinforcement designs,” he says. “We make the overall design more efficient, and more sustainable.”
