About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Windstream Wholesale Brings Network Diversity to Hillsboro Ecosystem

There is now a new game in town!

Windstream Wholesale, a leading provider of advanced optical solutions, today announced that it has connected its Intelligent Converged Optical Network (ICON) to the Hillsboro, Oregon, cable landing station. With over a dozen subsea cables terminating to the surrounding region, Hillsboro is home to numerous thriving high-tech companies in what is known as the “Silicon Forest.”

Windstream now provides diverse routes from both the Hillsboro and Portland markets to data centers across the country.

“We are excited to bring our award-winning services to the Hillsboro cable landing station,” said Joe Scattareggia, executive vice president of Windstream Wholesale. “Now, for the first time, customers have access alternatives to diverse, high-capacity connectivity into the Hillsboro ecosystem, and they recognize the value that Windstream Wholesale offers. We have already sold fifty 100-gigabit wave connections to multiple customers, including a large hyper-scaler and an international cloud/content provider, and we’re just getting started.”

Windstream currently provides connectivity to data centers in Hillsboro operated by Digital Realty, Flexential, Stack, EdgeConneX and QTS.

“As Windstream continues to expand its reach to better serve its customers, we’re excited to partner with them as they deploy with us in Hillsboro – an important hub for connectivity and internet exchange linking the Pacific Northwest, Asia and beyond. This is the next step in our open interconnection roadmap to build the largest open fabric of fabrics in partnership with the industry,” said Tony Bishop, senior vice president of Platform, Growth and Marketing at Digital Realty. “The new fiber route provides additional network diversity for enterprises and service providers in Hillsboro and complements our plan to implement a data-centric architecture that supports the performance needed for customers to overcome data gravity challenges and scale digital business at key centers of data exchange.”

Windstream services include waves, dark fiber, Dedicated Internet Access, and managed spectrum. In addition, Windstream’s entrance into the Hillsboro market creates additional diversity by eliminating the need to route traffic through the Pittock Block telecom hub in Portland.

The expansion into Hillsboro is part of Windstream Wholesale’s ongoing initiative to provide a rich set of high-bandwidth WAN advantages including low-latency transport to major data and international hubs across the U.S., including in Miami, New York City, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Jose. Diverse routing options protect networks against outages, while delivering coast-to-coast transport, as well as connectivity to thousands of Windstream-lit buildings across the U.S.
