About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Awards MITRE New Five-Year Contract to Continue Operating Health R&D Center

MITRE announced a new five-year contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to operate the CMS Alliance to Modernize Healthcare, a federally funded research and development center, more commonly known as the Health FFRDC.

Established in 2012, the Health FFRDC serves the public interest by tackling complex, cross-cutting challenges affecting health and well-being. As the Health FFRDC operator, MITRE serves as an objective advisor to CMS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health, Health Resources and Services Administration, Administration for Children and Families, and all the operating divisions across HHS, as well as other governmental organizations with health missions.

“Leading the Health FFRDC over the past decade has been an absolute honor and privilege for MITRE,” said Kim Warren, vice president of MITRE’s Center for Transforming Health that operates the Health FFRDC. “We are thrilled to continue our close collaboration with HHS on our shared mission of ensuring healthy outcomes for all. From artificial intelligence in healthcare to cancer research breakthroughs, the Health FFRDC is ready to support government sponsors with what comes next.”

As operator of the Health FFRDC, MITRE engages more than 1,000 professionals with deep understanding of health mission policies, programs, and operations, and more than 9,000 MITRE employees with the technical skills to solve challenges as varied as improving maternal health, accelerating the development of COVID-19 diagnostics, and securing medical devices against cyber-attacks.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Health FFRDC was integral to advancing a rapid national response to massive healthcare supply chain challenges, creating innovative therapies, accelerating vaccines, reimagining public health services, and empowering leaders with information to make life-and-death decisions amid high uncertainty.

“COVID-19 spotlighted the special importance of FFRDCs to innovate and activate public-private partnerships quickly,” said Lisa Tutterow, MITRE, deputy director, Center for Transforming Health. “Through the Health FFRDC, MITRE serves as a pivot point that connects government sponsors, academia, and industry. Our role as a trusted advisor and ability to leverage public and confidential data uniquely positions us to solve the most pressing health and human services challenges.”
