About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Alaska High School Science and Engineering Teacher Receives 2023 Shell Science Teaching Award

Catherine Walker Wins $10,000 Cash Prize for Positive Impact on Her Students and School

Shell USA Inc. and the National Science Teaching Association today announced that Catherine Walker, a science and engineering teacher at Dimond High School in Anchorage, Alaska, is the recipient of the 2023 Shell Science Teaching Award. During an award ceremony at the NSTA National Conference in Atlanta in March, Walker was formally recognized for her achievement.

“Science teachers who demonstrate exemplary instructional methods and engage students in inquiry-based practices improve student interest, achievement, and attainment of technical degrees,” said Dr. Frazier Wilson, VP, Shell USA Company Foundation, Director, Workforce Development and Diversity Outreach “They promote creativity and innovation skills that support critical thinking, exploration, and discovery – all needed for future careers.”

The foundation of Walker’s educational philosophy is to give students opportunities to fail forward in a safe, productive environment. She aims to provide opportunities for students to struggle with tasks and ideas so they learn to collaborate to find solutions. She teaches students how to give one another constructive, effective feedback and how to reflect on feedback to improve their work. Her students are exposed to career connections in a variety of ways and are given power over their learning to pursue interests and see meaning in the professional and technological skills they are developing at school. Walker communicates openly with students and their caregivers and reflects on their feedback so she can grow and improve as a teacher.

In 2015, Walker was honored with a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). She is National Board Certified and has earned National Geographic teacher certification. She also has received the Alaska SeaLife Center’s Marine Science Outreach Award, which is presented to a person, team, or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to ocean literacy via formal or informal education, media, or other communications.

Walker received the Shell Science Teaching Award for her positive impact on her students and school through exemplary classroom science teaching. She was awarded a $10,000 cash prize from Shell USA Inc. and expenses to attend NSTA’s National Conference in Atlanta, which took place March 22–25.

“Congratulations to all the outstanding NSTA award winners. NSTA Teacher Awards are one of the highest honors any educator can receive. We are extremely proud of the work these incredible educators have accomplished. Each one of them is an exemplary role model for their colleagues and an inspiration for their students,” said NSTA President Elizabeth Mulkerrin.

In addition to Walker, two finalists were selected. Crystal McDowell, a science teacher at Greenbrier High School in Evans, Georgia, and Jennie Warmouth, a teacher at Spruce Elementary School in Seattle, Washington, received expenses to attend NSTA’s National Conference in Atlanta, and were recognized for their achievements at the award ceremony that took place during the conference.
