About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Accenture Supports Largest Migration of Electronic Medical Record System to Microsoft Azure

Effort marks new milestone in Mount Sinai Health System’s transformation journey to the cloud

Accenture (NYSE: ACN) supported the Mount Sinai Health System (Mount Sinai) with the migration of its enterprise electronic medical record (EMR) system, Epic, to the Microsoft Azure cloud environment. This marks the largest production instance of Epic running on Azure, a significant development in the complex healthcare industry.

Working in collaboration with Accenture, Avanade and Microsoft, one of New York City’s largest academic medical systems kicked off its transformation journey to the cloud last year to enable innovation at a faster pace and ultimately improve healthcare access, experiences and outcomes. Accenture is leading the development and implementation of the strategic transformation, which also includes the migration of Mount Sinai’s clinical applications to the cloud. On an ongoing basis, Accenture will provide cloud managed services, including server management and support for migrated workloads; automation and analytics; storage and backup operations; and database support.

Kristin Myers, executive vice president, chief digital and information officer, and dean for digital and information technology at Mount Sinai, said, “We prioritized moving our Epic EMR system to Azure as a key component in creating secure, connected and insight-driven healthcare experiences for our patients. This digital transformation is allowing us to leverage new technologies—like artificial intelligence—to improve our business structure and drive efficiencies to deliver on our mission of providing compassionate care.”

The transition of Mount Sinai’s EMR system to the cloud allows access to patient information from anywhere at any time, which will lead to improved care coordination and collaboration for better patient outcomes. In addition to substantial cost savings achieved from reducing on-premise infrastructure, the implementation is improving Mount Sinai’s systems resiliency and reducing cybersecurity risk through modern architectures, continuous monitoring, and enhanced security measures and protocols.

As part of the transformation, Accenture and Mount Sinai are also building a foundation for artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies to drive innovation. This will allow Mount Sinai to adapt to changing trends by expanding and scaling new services and capabilities that meet patient and clinician needs. The move is also creating sustainability benefits through the reduction of carbon emissions.

Rich Birhanzel, Accenture’s global healthcare industry lead, said, “Healthcare organizations today are focused on expanding access to affordable care, creating better patient experiences and improving clinical outcomes. Achieving these things requires continuous innovation, data insight and integration as well as new ways of working. With this strategic migration of clinical applications, Mount Sinai is embracing the power of cloud and the innovation it can drive in care delivery.”
