About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Vecima’s Broadband Access Solution Accelerates TDS Telecom’s Restoration Efforts after New Mexico Wildfires

Vecima Networks Inc. (TSX: VCM) commends TDS Telecommunications LLC (TDS®) on its accelerated restoration activities following the recent wildfires in Ruidoso, New Mexico, thanks in part to the company’s effective use of the Entra® Remote MACPHY bundled solution. The wildfires destroyed TDS’ headend, cutting off connectivity to not only customers, but also to the main communication lines for anchor tenants in the community.

Vecima provided the turnkey Remote MACPHY solution, featuring the Entra SC-2D3 Remote MACPHY Access Node, as a faster, simpler, and more cost-effective alternative to a headend rebuild. With the bundled solution, TDS was able to deploy and deliver services within a 10-day period instead of months for a headend rebuild.

The Entra SC-2D3 delivers high downstream and upstream bandwidth, resilient and flexible design, and increased capacity. It enables higher service tiers, including gigabit services and is centrally managed and controlled by the Entra Access Controller (EAC), providing simple and intuitive configuration and management of both DOCSIS and Fiber Access nodes.

Vecima developed the Remote MACPHY bundle to enable smaller cable operators to access the broad advantages of Distributed Access Architecture (DAA) and provide a cost-effective, and future-proof path to DOCSIS® 4.0 at any scale. Also included in the bundle are the Entra DV-12 legacy QAM adapter, which enables existing MPEG video QAMs to seamlessly migrate to the DAA environment.

“We couldn’t have re-established connectivity as quickly to our DOCSIS® customers in the area without the Remote MACPHY solution,” said TDS Telecom Director of Engineering Christopher Haskin. “DAA architecture was instrumental to fast service restoration because of its simplicity and compact deployment footprint that dispenses with much of the legacy headend footprint. This is a great example of having the right product at the right time.”

“We were proud to support TDS in its recovery in New Mexico during a very difficult time,” said Dagmara Gwozdz, Vice President of North America Sales for Vecima. “Vecima understands the needs of our regional service providers, and we are committed to providing solutions that scale to their needs, both present and future.”

Vecima’s DAA portfolio, recognized by the Dell’Oro Group as the global market share leader in Remote MACPHY and Remote OLT solutions for three consecutive years, is deployed by operators around the world. With broad support for all next-generation cable access technologies, high-value legacy services, and proven industry-leading interoperability, the networks of tomorrow are deployable today without compromise.
