About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

VergeSense Deepens Integration with Microsoft Places to Offer Seamless Floor Plan Conversion for Enhanced Workplace Optimization

VergeSense, a leader in occupancy intelligence, is expanding its collaboration with Microsoft Places by offering all customers the ability to use VergeSense floor plan in Microsoft Places. Microsoft Places, announced general availability at Microsoft Ignite in Chicago, is a new AI-powered workplace app that enables seamless coordination for employees, modernizes ease of in-office connection and experiences, and empowers teams to optimize their spaces and maximize their ROI.

Building on the integration of VergeSense’s comprehensive occupancy data with Microsoft Places, this new workplace app enables customers to seamlessly leverage their up-to-date floorplans from VergeSense in Places. In doing so, companies can visualize, plan, and optimize their office environments with even more accuracy, creating spaces that better align with both employee needs and organizational goals.

“Our goal is to provide customers with the tools they need to improve space utilization and drive efficiency,” said Dan Ryan, CEO & Co-founder of VergeSense. “This expanded integration ensures that floor plan data is accessible directly within Microsoft Places, enabling our customers to reimagine their spaces and make smarter, data-driven decisions.”

“Our broadened collaboration with VergeSense enables customers to create and manage their floor plans within Microsoft Places,” said Brennan McReynolds, Product Strategy & Partnerships Lead, Microsoft for Places at Microsoft Corp. “These types of partner innovations support the speed to customer value and insights needed to elevate and optimize the world’s workplaces.”

The VergeSense platform is built on mapping infrastructure that converts office floor plans of any format (DWG, PDF, etc.) into geographically referenceable data models in the Indoor Mapping Data Format (IMDF). These digital maps are then merged with space metadata and measured occupancy data to create a comprehensive digital replica of customers’ offices. The Occupancy Intelligence Platform directly integrates with various integrated workplace management systems (IWMS) to continuously sync floorplans and metadata, automating otherwise manual change management processes. This approach is critical for AI-enabled predictions and simulation powered by Workplace Assistant.

All existing VergeSense customers’ floor plans are now compatible with Microsoft Places and can easily be exported to Microsoft Places in the IMDF format. Companies can digitize new floor plans in any file format within the VergeSense platform for Microsoft Places readiness.

“VergeSense and Microsoft Places are democratizing access to space and occupancy data to enable seamless, connected workplace experiences,” continued Ryan. “VergeSense’s continued integration with Microsoft Places is a testament to the growing demand for intelligent, AI-powered solutions that enable companies to optimize their real estate portfolios while fostering a more dynamic and connected work environment.”
