About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Boost Mobile and Wind River Collaborate on Largest CaaS Vendor Changeover on an Open RAN Network

Wind River® will now provide core-to-edge cloud infrastructure for the Boost Mobile network. As the largest Open RAN (O-RAN) deployment in the world, providing 5G voice to more than 200 million Americans, Boost Mobile’s transition to Wind River Studio Operator will mark the telecom industry’s largest containers-as-a-service (CaaS) vendor changeover on an Open RAN network.

“Boost Mobile, formerly DISH Wireless, has been and continues to be the world leader in developing and operationalizing a carrier-grade cloud-native Open RAN 5G network at a national scale," said Eben Albertyn, Chief Technology Officer at Boost Mobile. “Boost Mobile is beyond proving Open RAN technology works, and is now applying component interchangeability through our new engagement with Wind River. We continue to evaluate performance and the cost effectiveness of our network components and can rapidly pivot to new and different solutions. We aim to ensure our network remains cutting-edge and customers continue to enjoy the benefits of a cloud-native 5G network, including greater reliability, higher speeds and cost effective services.”

“With the world’s largest Open RAN deployment, Boost Mobile is helping to lead innovation in the market. Wind River is proud to collaborate with Boost Mobile on this major milestone to advance Open RAN,” said Paul Miller, Chief Technology Officer at Wind River. “As a leader in the telecom landscape that powers the majority of 5G vRAN/Open RAN deployments across the globe, through our Studio Operator capabilities, Wind River delivers cloud-native solutions that enable the commercial deployment of next-generation network infrastructure for service providers, like Boost Mobile, worldwide.”

Based on the open source StarlingX project, Studio Operator cloud platform technology provides a fully cloud-native, Kubernetes- and container-based architecture for the development, deployment, operations, and servicing of distributed edge networks at scale. It addresses service providers’ complex challenge of deploying and managing a cloud-native infrastructure for core-to-edge distributed cloud networks to provide traditional RAN performance in a vRAN/Open RAN deployment. Wind River Studio Operator conductor technology can orchestrate new service deployment across a complex cloud topology, with complete end-to-end automation and zero-touch provisioning, in a matter of minutes. Studio Operator analytics technology can help manage a distributed cloud network effectively, using AI/ML-generated insights for intelligent and automated decision-making.

Delivering proven technologies that keep telecommunications edge networks running reliably, Wind River has played key roles in the world’s first successful 5G data session; in the first Open RAN deployment in Canada; in building commercial vRAN/O-RAN programs, including one of the largest Open RAN networks in the world; and in launching the first fully automated edge data center for commercial service.
