About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Vecima Unveils Entra® vCMTS for Next-Gen Broadband Access

  • Entra® vCMTS is part of Vecima’s Entra Cloud™ platform of open, interoperable, cloud-native applications
  • Built to support DOCSIS® 4.0 & Turbo DOCSIS® 3.1 with backwards compatibility
  • Fully containerized platform is dynamically scalable for operators of every size
  • Automation-driven platform is designed for simplified orchestration, provisioning, and operational efficiency

Vecima Networks Inc. (TSX: VCM) today announced the Entra® Virtualized Cable Modem Termination System (vCMTS) as part of its Entra Cloud™ platform of open, interoperable, cloud-native applications that help cable operators transform their networks for next-generation broadband access. Entra vCMTS is built from the ground up to provide the scalability and throughput required for DOCSIS® 4.0 services.

The Entra vCMTS features an open, cloud-native design that is fully containerized and dynamically scalable for operators of every size at market-leading densities. Built on field-proven Vecima DOCSIS® technology, it is designed to maximize performance while minimizing space, power, and cost. It is interoperable with Vecima’s widely deployed Remote PHY Devices (RPDs) and Vecima is fully committed to interoperability with other vendors.

Available for commercial off-the-shelf server hardware, the Entra vCMTS leverages Vecima’s simplified host operating system and container orchestration methodology for maximum security and efficiency. By combining both Application Programming Interface (API) and Command Line Interface (CLI) approaches in one, the Entra vCMTS is a workforce multiplier for operators, offering a streamlined path for operators to transition from legacy platforms to a modern, highly automated, and high-reliability virtual DOCSIS platform.

“The Entra vCMTS represents our legacy of innovation and our commitment to providing open, flexible, and interoperable solutions that address the evolving and pressing needs in the market,” said Colin Howlett, Chief Technology Officer at Vecima. “Vecima leads the industry in DOCSIS DAA interoperability and we’re proud to bring this innovative platform to market.”

The platform is currently entering lab trials with a Tier 1 operator in North America and will be ready for field trials worldwide in the fourth quarter of calendar 2024.

“Through over a decade of pioneering investment and development of Distributed Access Architecture, Vecima has built the comprehensive Entra portfolio with the singular purpose of supporting our operator partners as they transform their world-leading networks to the multigigabit era,” said Sumit Kumar, Vecima President and CEO. “At our core, we believe these networks fuel global progress and empower communities everywhere. Our market-leading software that powers our entire Cable Access portfolio is flexible by design, and the virtualized Entra Cloud™ platform is a natural next step to once more support every operator with any architecture, underpinned by the common engine of our leading DAA intellectual property.”
