About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Comcast Activates $4.5M Fiber-Rich Internet Network in Houston County, Alabama

Comcast’s sizable investment brings five communities new high-speed connectivity options

A new and powerful Internet network is now online in parts of Houston County, Alabama, connecting communities to high-speed, reliable Internet. “Houston County is very thankful for Comcast’s increased investment in our community,” said Brandon Shoupe, Chairman of the Houston County Commission. “Their continued commitment to provide fast, reliable broadband to our citizens brings us closer to ensuring every citizen in Houston County has this increasingly necessary service.”

The next-generation network gives Houston County access to reliable and fast Internet speeds that outperform competitors — up to 1.2 gigabits per second (Gbps) for residential customers and up to 100 Gbps for businesses.

“Here in Kinsey, having access to high-speed Internet is so important to our residents and small businesses,” said Mayor Jason Reneau of Kinsey. “Kinsey offers residents the quiet of rural life paired with the conveniences of urban life, and Comcast expanding its fast and reliable services helps keep us even more connected.”

“Comcast has proudly served the Dothan community for many years. We’re thrilled more areas of Southeast Alabama are now online and can access our powerful network,” said Jeff Buzzelli, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Florida Region. “This is a big moment for us and these wonderful communities as more Alabamians can now connect to fast, reliable Internet. Whether it’s connecting with loved ones or pursuing employment opportunities, there’s a future of unlimited possibilities. We’re proud Comcast chose to invest millions in Houston County.”

Houston County residents in Dothan east of Ross Clark Circle and Route 431, as well as parts of Ashford, Cottonwood, Cowarts, Kinsey, and Webb can sign up for Internet by visiting Xfinity.com.

Connecting Businesses to Customers

For local businesses, Comcast Business offers a suite of connectivity, communications, networking, cybersecurity, wireless, and managed solutions to help organizations of different sizes prepare for what’s next.

“Reliable, high-speed Internet is essential for my business because without it, I’m not able to process payments, share promotional videos or communicate with my customers,” said Jolando Butler, owner of Desserts by Jolando on Main Street in Dothan. “I’ve been with Comcast Business for six years and they’ve always been dependable.”

Powered by the nation’s largest Gig-speed broadband network, and backed by 24/7 customer support, Comcast Business is the nation’s largest Internet provider to small and mid-size businesses and one of the leading service providers to the Enterprise market. Comcast Business has been consistently recognized by industry analysts and associations as a leader and innovator, and one of the fastest-growing providers of Ethernet services.

Accessing Affordable Internet

Comcast is committed to making Internet accessible and affordable across communities in Alabama. Since 2011, the technology leader has offered Internet Essentials. The program provides low-cost Internet service, digital skills training and subsidized computers to eligible income-constrained households. Internet Essentials has helped hundreds of thousands of Alabamians since its launch in 2011, including students, senior citizens, veterans and people with disabilities enrolled in public assistance programs and more.

Powered by Xfinity

Comcast’s network and Internet experience are powering Houston County homes today and into the future with:

  • Ultimate Capacity: Xfinity customers connect more than 1 billion devices across the company’s network annually. With the next-generation Xfinity gateways we deliver the most advanced WiFi technology carrying three times more bandwidth to power streaming, gaming, videoconferencing, and more, simultaneously.
  • Fastest Internet: More than a third of Xfinity Internet customers subscribe to gigabit speed products. Recently Comcast connected the first customers in the world to a DOCSIS 4.0 connection, delivering symmetrical gig speeds over existing connections in customers’ homes with plans to continue to rollout these speeds across the country over the coming years.
  • Unprecedented Coverage: The latest Xfinity Gateway provides a more reliable connection throughout the home. Customers can get wall-to-wall WiFi coverage with a powerful WiFi Boost Pod that extends coverage to hard-to-reach areas of the home.
  • Most Reliable Connection: Comcast is scaling the nation’s largest and most reliable network that passes 62 million homes and businesses and counting. The company launched Storm-Ready WiFi, a new device that comes powered with cellular and battery backup to help keep customers connected even when the power goes out.
  • Ultra-Low Latency: The Xfinity network and the latest Xfinity Gateway are a powerful combination that deliver ultra-low latency for those moments when response times matter most like video games, a fast-growing category with Xfinity households averaging more than one gaming console per home.
