About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Kinetic’s Whole-Home Wi-Fi Installs Surpassed Half-Million Homes

  • Kinetic has completed over 600,000 free Whole-Home Wi-Fi certifications optimizing connectivity and reducing service calls.
  • This virtual certification improves installation by addressing issues like network interference and router placement, offering real-time feedback for optimal Wi-Fi performance.

Kinetic, a leading provider of residential fiber-optic internet service, announced the completion of more than 600,000 free Whole-Home Wi-Fi certifications since the technology’s launch, reaching customers across its 18-state footprint. Instituted almost two years ago, this installation process is part of Kinetic’s commitment to enhancing quality installation for customers, thus reducing future service calls.

“Homes today have more devices connected than ever before, and these devices often extend throughout the home from basements to attics and everywhere in between,” said Barry Bishop, Kinetic senior vice president of Field Operations. “Through our Whole-Home Wi-Fi certification process, our customers receive a no-fuss, no-problem installation process when we install their internet and Wi-Fi. Our certified technicians are committed to ensuring a friendly and professional installation process where all devices and hardware work as they should before the job is done.”

In collaboration with RouteThis Certify, Kinetic’s Whole-Home Wi-Fi Set Up process significantly enhances the initial installation experience for customers. This process addresses and mitigates potential issues such as network interference, obstructions, router placement, and congestion that can adversely affect a customer’s Wi-Fi connection. The app, which is used by Kinetic’s 1,700 install and repair technicians, provides real-time feedback so the technician can find the ideal equipment placement for the best Wi-Fi experience.

“We’re grateful for the efficient installation experience this tool provides our techs, allowing us to better serve our customers,” said Dustin Simpson, Kinetic’s senior director of Systems Transformation. “Ultimately, by improving our installation process, we hope to create more comprehensive connectivity from the start, reducing the need for repeat service calls.”

Kinetic said this distinctive service sets them apart from competitors by optimizing internet connectivity throughout the entire home. By offering a comprehensive "Wi-Fi certificate," customers gain a transparent view of their network's performance, and quality control becomes a tangible asset they can hold.

“One of the standout features of RouteThis is its ability to highlight areas that might benefit from Wi-Fi extenders, particularly in multi-level homes,” said Dilan Rodas, a seasoned Kinetic technician who has witnessed firsthand the impact of this innovative tool while working in the field. “This functionality not only improves the credibility of technicians installing the Wi-Fi, but also resolves connectivity issues, such as those affecting all devices across the residence.”

RouteThis Certify has significantly improved Kinetic’s Whole Home Wi-Fi’s expected speeds on any customer premises equipment (CPE) device. Behind the scenes, RouteThis Certify continues to develop platform capabilities by summarizing the installation details collected during the service and making them available to the customer and operations teams via a certificate.

“This service exemplifies Kinetic's commitment to delivering exceptional broadband services and improving customer satisfaction, making it a valuable asset that is uniquely available to Kinetic customers,” Simpson said.

Kinetic's success with the RouteThis Certify app demonstrates its commitment to innovation and quality, adapting to the rapidly changing technological landscape to deliver superior customer experiences. For more information about RouteThis Certify, visit: https://www.routethis.com/certify.
