About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Optimum Unveils Network Upgrade Plan to Enable Multi-Gigabit Speeds in 65% of Footprint by 2028, Doubling Current Availability

Optimum Celebrates Three Million Fiber Passing Milestone

Optimum, a leading provider of fiber internet, mobile, and TV services, today announces network upgrade plans to enable the delivery of multi-gigabit internet speeds across 65% of its service footprint by 2028. This will double the availability of multi-gigabit speeds over the next three years.

Alongside this initiative, the company is celebrating a significant achievement: its Optimum Fiber internet service is currently available at three million passings, representing nearly one third of the company’s footprint.

"Optimum is committed to empowering residents and businesses with the fast, reliable internet services they need to thrive in a digital-first world,” said Nate Edwards, Executive Vice President, Network Services at Optimum. “By investing in our network, boosting multi-gig speeds, and expanding fiber internet access, we’re not just creating a faster connection -- we’re paving the way for innovation and growth for our customers.”

Multi-Gigabit Network Upgrades

Optimum is embarking on a major network enhancement initiative to enable the delivery of multi-gigabit internet speeds to 65% of its service areas by 2028, a significant increase from today’s multi-gig availability of around 30%.

This expansion includes the introduction of mid-split upgrades across areas of the company’s hybrid-coax network, enabling download speeds of up to 2 Gbps downstream, as well as the continued extension of Optimum's fiber network, which delivers symmetrical speeds of up to 8 Gbps. These ultra-fast speeds are designed to meet the growing demands of modern households and businesses, supporting activities such as 4K/8K streaming, cloud gaming, remote work, and the proliferation of smart home devices.

Celebrating Three Million Fiber Passings

In a landmark achievement, Optimum has expanded its 100% fiber network to three million passings, primarily in the New York tri-state area. The company is focused on the continued expansion of its network, with plans to add an additional 175,000 passings in 2025, the majority of which will be fiber.

Optimum’s award-winning fiber network was recently ranked by Ookla® for the fastest and most reliable internet speeds in New York and New Jersey and lowest latency and best gaming experience in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The company’s hybrid-fiber coax network was also ranked No 1. in fastest internet speeds by Ookla® in key markets including Coconino County, Arizona, Baxter and Union Counties Arkansas, Angelina and Eastland Counties, Texas, and more.

Currently, more than 95% of Optimum’s network is enabled for 1 Gig internet speeds or higher. The company also offers a full portfolio of connectivity services for residential and business customers, including mobile, TV, and phone, as well as a host of managed services geared at small, medium, and enterprise businesses.
