About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

The report highlights Zurn Elkay’s progress in addressing critical water challenges and improving operational sustainability, including advancements toward its 16 timebound goals. Notably, the company reduced its energy intensity by 23% from its 2021 baseline, surpassing the 15% reduction target set for 2024. Zurn Elkay is also on track to meet its goal of a 50% reduction in GHG intensity by 2030, achieving a 38% reduction since 2021. The report details improvements to the supply chain sustainability program, enhancing integrity and reducing risk through supplier screenings and audits. Additionally, Zurn Elkay established four new goals for associate health and safety, waste reduction, philanthropic giving and associate development programs.

“Through the advancement of our sustainability strategy, we envision a more sustainable future as we deliver customer-focused solutions that make clean water more accessible and sustainable, minimize our environmental footprint and foster a workplace that empowers our associates,” said Todd A. Adams, Chairman and CEO of Zurn Elkay Water Solutions. “Our legacy of innovation is rooted in Simply Doing the Right Thing.”

In 2024, the company launched several innovative solutions, including a Total Cost of Ownership and Sustainability Calculator to highlight the environmental and economic benefits of Zurn Elkay products; an easy-to-install residential filtered faucet with a commercial-grade filter certified to remove lead, PFOA/OS and microplastics; connected filtered bottle filling stations; and a Hydro•X flush valve that eliminates the need for external power sources. More than 86% of Zurn Elkay’s revenue comes from products that conserve water, reduce energy and protect clean water sources. In 2024, these products saved 32.5 billion gallons of water, delivered 2.3 billion gallons of filtered drinking water and prevented 19 billion single-use plastic bottles.

The report highlights Zurn Elkay’s advocacy for filter-first legislation in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, New Jersey and Massachusetts to ensure K-12 students have access to clean, filtered drinking water. As part of its $1.3 million in philanthropic giving, Zurn Elkay expanded its Fountains for Youth program, donating filtered bottle filling stations to school districts such as San Francisco Unified School District, Milwaukee Public Schools and East Ramapo [NY] Central School District, benefiting more than a million students.

Zurn Elkay Celebrates a Significant Milestone in 2025

The release of the 2024 Sustainability Report coincides with the company’s announcement of its 125th anniversary, a milestone few companies achieve. In 1900, John A. Zurn, a 26-year-old from Erie, Pennsylvania, purchased discontinued patterns and tooling for a patented backwater valve and set up shop in a barn. Zurn Elkay will celebrate this milestone with employees throughout the year.
