About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Rootstock ERP Launches Tariff Management for Manufacturers

Enables landed cost tracking, identification of alternate suppliers, pricing simulations, and a roadmap for next-gen capabilities—including a tariff agent

Rootstock Software, a recognized leader in the Manufacturing ERP space, today announced the launch of its new Tariff Management Central, a comprehensive approach designed to help manufacturers manage the operational and financial impact of shifting global tariffs with greater speed, accuracy, and agility.

This announcement comes amid one of the most volatile trade environments in recent history. For manufacturers, this unpredictability has made it critical to track tariff exposure, run rapid simulations, and adjust sourcing strategies without delay.

“The speed and unpredictability of recent tariff changes have introduced a new level of risk to manufacturers,” said Raj Badarinath, Chief Product & Marketing Officer at Rootstock Software. “Our Tariff Management Central gives them the visibility and tools they need to respond faster—whether that means adjusting supplier relationships, updating pricing, or reforecasting inventory plans.”

Rootstock’s new module introduces an intuitive experience, pulling together ERP-native functionality with tools that are immediately available and scalable for growth. Customers can take advantage of the following features:

  • Landed Cost Tracking. Calculates the total landed cost of goods—including tariffs, freight, and duties—by applying weighted average costing as inventory is received. This provides an accurate view of rising input costs and ensures that product and pricing decisions reflect true cost-of-goods.
  • QuickStart Tariff Tracking via Material Overhead. For organizations seeking a faster and less complex alternative to full landed cost configuration, the module can support tariff tracking through material overhead. This approach is ideal when tariff rates are known and stable, allowing manufacturers to apply a fixed percentage to inventory costs without waiting for freight invoices or configuring multi-step workflows. It reduces complexity and processing time—especially for finance teams that prefer a streamlined solution to reflect tariff impact on gross margin.
  • Supplier Rebalancing and Sourcing Optimization. Surfaces tariff-adjusted supplier costs across geographies, allowing sourcing teams to quickly reassess supplier preferences and pivot to more cost-effective options as duties shift.
  • Tariff Simulation and Pricing Strategy. Empowers finance and operations teams to model tariff impacts before they take effect. Scenario planning helps teams decide whether to absorb, offset, or pass through cost increases—protecting profitability before it's compromised.
  • Profitability Monitoring and Margin Alerts. Offers real-time insight into product-level and supplier-level profitability. As material costs increase due to tariffs, the module flags shrinking margins so leadership can adjust pricing, purchasing, or sourcing in response.
  • Inventory Timing and Holding Strategies. Supports proactive inventory planning, such as purchasing ahead of tariff imposition or delaying acquisition of tariff-impacted items. Insight into timing and regional stocking helps manufacturers reduce unnecessary costs while maintaining availability.
  • Integration with AvaTax Cross-Border. Available within Avalara’s AvaTax platform, easily add AvaTax Cross-Border to calculate customs duties and import taxes in real-time, plus automate the assignment of Harmonized System (HS) codes—a global standard used to identify goods for international trade. By mapping these codes to products and tracking their country of origin, the system ensures that the correct tariff rate is applied in real time. This automation eliminates manual steps, reduces compliance risk, and helps prevent overpayment or shipment delays due to misclassified goods. With real-time calculation of duties and taxes, businesses lean on Avalara’s experts to keep up with ever-changing tariffs.
  • Embedded in ERP with Front-Office CRM Connectivity. The module is built natively within Rootstock ERP, ensuring that sourcing, inventory, finance, and production teams work from a single source of truth. It can also connect to customer-facing systems—enabling sales, quoting, and customer service teams to stay informed when tariff-driven changes affect costs, pricing, or delivery timelines. This cross-functional visibility helps manufacturers align decision-making across departments and respond to customers with speed and confidence.

In addition to the current capabilities, Rootstock is investing in new technologies to bring greater automation and intelligence to tariff management. A next-generation, AI-powered tariff agent is in development and is expected in an upcoming release. This enhancement will provide intelligent recommendations and adaptive workflows, helping manufacturers automate tariff tracking and take faster action as regulations shift.

“This isn’t just a reporting tool—it’s a decision cockpit,” added Badarinath. “Manufacturers can’t afford to wait for month-end reports to understand tariff impacts. They need actionable insights and the ability to respond quickly. That’s what this module delivers. We’re delivering a powerful set of tools today, while also preparing our customers for what’s coming next.”

Tariff Management Central is currently in Beta and can be tailored to support both QuickStart methodology and more advanced implementations. Interested parties are encouraged to schedule a demo to explore how these tools can be configured to match their unique sourcing and financial strategies.
