About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

International Film Features the Spacelabs Healthcare Rothman Index® and How it Transforms Care

Rothman Index uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help healthcare providers detect subtle changes over time in a patient’s condition that often go unnoticed

Spacelabs Healthcare today announced its Rothman Index® predictive analytics platform has been highlighted in an international film featuring advancements that are helping nurses improve care. The film, called “Caring with Courage,” was produced by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions and will be presented by the International Council of Nurses at its annual meeting held June 9-13, 2025, in Helsinki, Finland.

Used at hospitals across the U.S., including Northside Hospital in Atlanta, GA, the Rothman Index was first developed in 2013 by Michael and Steven Rothman after their mother died of an undetected complication following a low-risk surgical procedure. The Rothmans created the Index to help save other people from avoidable deaths. Since it was introduced, hospitals that have incorporated the application in their patient monitoring systems have reported it provides a range of lifesaving benefits, such as helping reduce deaths, the number of patients who go into cardiac or respiratory arrest, and the number of patients who must go back into the intensive care unit after being moved to a step-down unit.i

“The Rothman Index is a revolutionary technology that exemplifies Spacelab Healthcare’s dedication to improving treatment and helping providers deliver exceptional care to their patients,” said Dr. Wilson Constantine, president of Spacelabs Healthcare. “It is just another example of how Spacelabs is working to solve the greatest challenges the healthcare system currently faces, and ensuring patients receive exemplary care.”

The Rothman Index, which is cleared for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, incorporates 26 different clinical data points, including labs, vital signs and nurse assessments, from a patient’s electronic health record (EHR) and calculates how sick a person is using a proprietary predictive analytics model. This practical application of artificial intelligence (AI) to healthcare was designed to provide a 24/7 safety net, alerting physicians and nurses to the early signs of deterioration, and providing them with an opportunity to get to the bedside when there is still time to intervene and prevent a crisis.

“These exceptional films gathered from around the world, are real life examples of how investing in nurses and nursing delivers quality, accessible, more affordable healthcare,” said Howard Catton, CEO of the International Council for Nurses (ICN).With all the challenges that the world is now facing, the films and the nurses they portray speak to both the humanity of the profession and the economic reasons to support them.”

“Caring with Courage” highlights 14 branded stories that have been filmed across four continents, depicting the global face of nursing and the variety of roles nurses take on when caring for their communities. Spacelabs’ section of the film can be watched at Spacelabs Healthcare Equipping Nurses With The Tools To Better Patient Health, while the full film can be watched at Caring with Courage.
