About Cabling Installation & Maintenance:

Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals.

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on:

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Clearfield Launches Flexible TetherSmart Multi-Fiber Terminal as Industry’s Smallest, Carrier-Grade Access Terminal

Micro-sized terminal simplifies fiber deployment by fitting where others can’t—ideal for FTTx and 5G backhaul applications

Clearfield, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLFD), the leader in community broadband fiber connectivity, today announced the launch of the TetherSmart™ Multi-Fiber Terminal (MFT)—the industry’s smallest, fully sealed, 10 port access terminal for use in Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), Fiber-to-the-Business (FTTB), and 5G backhaul network applications.

The TetherSmart MFT’s configurability and industry-standard SC, MPO and hardened fiber optic connector (HFOC) options enable craft-friendly, plug-and-play connectivity. The flexible product design also allows for future portfolio expansion. As the smallest, sealed terminal in the market, the MFT is optimized for deployment in pedestals as small as 6 inches, as well as below grade and aerial mounting options—ideal for dense neighborhoods, business parks, and decorative 5G small cell poles. "As our customers look to connect more homes and businesses, in rural, urban, and suburban environments, we’re seeing growing demand for smaller, faster, and smarter deployment options—and the TetherSmart MFT is Clearfield’s answer to that call,” said Anis Khemakhem, Chief Marketing Officer at Clearfield. "Its compact footprint gives network operators the flexibility to economically reach any customer, anywhere—without compromise on speed, performance, or durability.”

The TetherSmart MFT supports both centralized or distributed split architectures, and provides capabilities for a shifted, pass-through architecture. A single or multi-fiber input feeds up to eight single-fiber drop ports, with an optional multi-fiber express output port to enable daisy chaining to other terminals deeper in the network. This modular configuration simplifies network scaling without added engineering complexity.

All terminals meet Clearfield’s FiberDeep® performance standards, achieving ultra-low insertion loss: 0.2dB max for single-fiber and 0.35 dB max for multi-fiber connectors. Designed for long-term outdoor use, the MFT is GR-771 compliant and features UV-resistant molded plastic, a uniquely designed ruggedized, no kink and high-crush-resistant spiral armored tubing, and environmental sealing to withstand harsh OSP conditions.
