About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Frontgrade Unveils SBC-2A72 with 32GB NAND to Enable High-Performance Edge Computing in Air and Space Platforms

Frontgrade Technologies, a leading provider of high-reliability electronic solutions for space and national security missions, has released the SBC-2A72 VNX+ Single Board Computer. This compact, space-qualified embedded computing solution delivers high performance compute and graphics acceleration to onboard processing, command, and data handling (C&DH) and graphics processing for next-generation space missions. The SBC-2A72 includes 32 GB of space-grade eMMC managed NAND storage, the highest capacity available in today’s market, and represents a major advancement in performance, integration, and reliability delivered in a compact, VNX+ standard form factor.

Built around the radiation-tolerant Vorago VA7230 processor, the SBC-2A72 features dual ARM® Cortex®-A72 cores and an integrated Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to support high-throughput computing, graphics rendering, and intelligent operations. The board is engineered for low SWaP-C systems, making it the optimal choice for small satellites, unmanned aerial systems, lunar vehicle displays, rovers, and other mission platforms that require maximum yet cost-effective performance in a small form factor.

“As part of our MAMBA product offerings, the SBC-2A72 unlocks scalable processing performance for mission designers who need to pack more computing at the edge,” said Lorne Graves, Chief Technology Officer at Frontgrade. “Our new high capacity, low SWaP SBC provides a modular, extensible building block with an impressive 32GB of NV memory. This represents a significant capability and performance boost over previously available computing solutions.”

The SBC-2A72 empowers mission architects with high-speed processing, enhanced graphics, and increased system autonomy. Its dual-core ARM architecture and integrated GPU enable real-time image processing, telemetry analytics, and onboard AI inference, without overloading central mission processors or ground communication links.

Key Features:

  • 15,000 DMIPS of processing performance
  • Integrated GPU provides an additional 10 GFLOPS performance
  • 32GB NAND eMMC directly connected to the CPU
  • DisplayPort 1.3 output to drive embedded LCD displays and mobile interface
  • Supports PCIe 3.0 for high-speed data transactions and access to large storage media

As part of Frontgrade’s MAMBA (Modular Applications for Mission processing with a Bifurcated Architecture) suite, the SBC-2A72 supports the initiative’s goals of hardware modularity, system interoperability, and design agility. Samples are currently available for order with full production expected later this year.
