About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Timothy Lubniewski Calls for Greater Recognition of Trades and Blue-Collar Leadership in National Business Dialogue

Timothy Lubniewski Calls for Greater Recognition of Trades and Blue-Collar Leadership in National Business Dialogue
Timothy Lubniewski, Staten Island, NY, USA.
Industry Veteran Featured in In-Depth Interview on Building Trust, Resilience, and Real-World Strategy

Timothy D. Lubniewski, General Manager at Rose Paving LLC and one of the most respected names in the paving and maintenance sector, is using the spotlight from a recent in-depth career interview to advocate for something bigger than business success: the long-overdue recognition of skilled trades as essential engines of the American economy.

In the featured interview, Lubniewski shares the story of launching his first construction business at age 23, growing it into one of the Northeast's top paving firms, and eventually joining Rose Paving, now the largest private commercial paving maintenance company in the U.S. But it’s not just a business story—it’s a call to action.

“Leadership isn’t just boardrooms and titles,” says Lubniewski. “It’s showing up every day, knowing your trade, respecting your team, and doing the work right the first time.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the skilled trades sector is expected to grow by 10% through 2033, yet the average age of trade workers is rising, and fewer young people are entering the field. A 2023 National Association of Home Builders study revealed that 77% of contractors face serious labour shortages.

Lubniewski sees this as a leadership gap—and a mindset problem.

“We need to stop framing trades as a backup plan. The skills and strategy involved in growing a paving company, a plumbing outfit, or an HVAC firm are no different from any start-up in Silicon Valley,” he says. “It’s time we tell those stories.”

In the interview, he reflects on learning from early mistakes and how faith and long-term thinking helped him navigate challenges. He credits much of his success to a belief in constant improvement and measuring success by the joy and trust of others.

“When your workers ask for your advice, when clients call you a friend—that’s when you know you’re leading,” Lubniewski explains. “Not because you say it, but because they feel it.”

He also highlights the role of purpose outside of profit. Lubniewski and his wife, college professor Kathryn Lubniewski, support local churches and community efforts through the Jacobsen Lubniewski Fund. He says giving back is part of the same value system that built his business: long-term commitment, shared effort, and building something that lasts.

Reframe What Success Looks Like

Lubniewski encourages business leaders, educators, and young professionals to start where they are:

  • Mentor a trade student or apprentice

  • Visit a local job site or vocational school to learn

  • Support businesses that invest in craft, ethics, and local labour

  • Share stories—not just of startups and tech, but of tradespeople and builders

“The future of leadership will be shaped by those willing to work hard, take ownership, and lift others,” says Lubniewski. “You don’t need a suit to make an impact—you need commitment.”
