About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Stuart Deane Urges Communities to Slow Down, Listen More, and Reconnect With What Matters

Stuart Deane Urges Communities to Slow Down, Listen More, and Reconnect With What Matters
Stuart Deane, Arlington, TX, USA.
The Brisbane-born realtor and former state athlete highlights the power of focus, listening, and small daily actions in building stronger lives and neighborhoods.

Stuart Deane, realtor and owner of TDT Realtors, is calling on individuals and communities to reclaim focus and connection in an era defined by constant distraction. Drawing on his journey from representing Queensland in athletics and golf to running his own real estate brokerage, Deane emphasizes that success comes from slowing down and listening, not rushing to do more.

“Early in my career, I thought I had to prove myself by talking more than I listened,” Deane recalls. “But I learned quickly that real progress comes when you let people share what really matters to them. That one shift changes everything—at work and in life.”

Why It Matters

  • According to the American Psychological Association, nearly 70% of adults report feeling distracted or unfocused daily.

  • Studies show that multitasking can reduce productivity by up to 40%.

  • Harvard research reveals that active listening builds stronger trust and collaboration, yet most people listen with only 25% efficiency.

For Deane, these statistics echo what he has seen firsthand. “I’ve watched clients light up when they feel heard—sometimes it’s not about the house at all, but about space for a pet, a hobby, or just peace of mind. That only comes out when you slow down enough to ask and really listen.”

Lessons From Sport

Deane credits much of his mindset to his athletic background. “On the track or the golf course, focus always mattered more than raw talent. You break the day into short, deliberate bursts. That same rhythm works in business and in daily life,” he says.

His practice of writing three priorities each morning and breaking work into 90-minute blocks mirrors what psychologists call “chunking,” a proven method for maintaining productivity while avoiding burnout.

A Call to Action

Instead of looking for big changes, Deane believes individuals can start small:

  • Write down three must-do tasks each morning.

  • Spend at least one conversation each day listening without interrupting.

  • Take short breaks—go for a walk, write a note, or even hit a few golf balls to reset.

“When I feel overwhelmed, I go swing a golf club until my head clears,” Deane shares. “Everyone needs their version of that—something repetitive, grounding, and simple.”

Closing Thought

Deane hopes his message reminds people that the path to growth is not about doing more, but about being present in what they already do. “Don’t rush to arrive,” he says. “The process—whether it’s training, building a business, or raising a family—is where the real lessons are.”
