Stricken by grief and unable to return home for her burial, he channeled his pain into a new purpose: to understand human anatomy and physiology and to dedicate himself to helping others heal—honoring his mother’s memory by becoming a beacon of hope for those in need.

But the journey was far from smooth. While attending nursing school, Afolabi was wrongfully accused of a crime he did not commit and was imprisoned for 10 months. During this dark period, the justice system failed him, and a series of ineffective lawyers drained his family’s resources, pushing them to the brink of bankruptcy. As he fought to clear his name, he found himself imprisoned without cause, enduring unimaginable emotional and physical strain. His release came only after the true perpetrator was identified, but his struggles didn’t end there. Afolabi was sent to immigration detention, facing deportation and a devastating separation from his wife and young son for over a year.

Amidst the harshest of trials, Afolabi never lost sight of his goal. Upon his release, he returned to nursing school, completed his training, and earned his certification as a licensed practical nurse. Today, Afolabi uses his personal experiences to fuel his work with individuals struggling with mental illness and disabilities, proving that healing is possible even in the most difficult of circumstances.

“I’ve walked through the darkest days, but those struggles only fueled my resolve,” says Micheal O.
