About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

South Bay Leader Jacobo Melcer Honored for Uplifting Bonita Youth and Strengthening Community Programs

BONITA, CA — July 2, 2025 — In a time when many communities are seeking solutions and support for underserved youth, Jacobo Melcer, a longtime resident of Bonita, CA, is making a meaningful difference in South Bay San Diego through quiet leadership, philanthropic action, and direct mentorship.

Melcer, best known for his role as Chairman and President of FrontCom.com, Inc., is being recognized locally for his powerful work behind the scenes—especially as a dedicated board member and benefactor of San Diego VeloYouth, a nonprofit that uses cycling to help teens develop discipline, self-worth, and life skills.

Since joining the VeloYouth board in 2018, Melcer has been more than a name on a list. He has become a hands-on supporter and trusted advisor for programs serving students in Bonita, Chula Vista, National City, and nearby communities.

“Jacobo is a cornerstone of our organization,” said Matt Hoffmann, President and Director of VeloYouth. “He doesn’t just fund programs—he believes in our kids, shows up for them, and invests time in helping them succeed.”

Melcer’s sponsorship—most notably through his business All-In Med, Inc.—earned the nonprofit’s Peloton Club designation, which is reserved for its most generous donors. That support has directly funded bicycles, helmets, racing fees, travel expenses, and instructional workshops that serve more than 100 youth annually in South Bay San Diego.

But the support goes far beyond financials. Students often mention “Mr. Jacobo” as someone who takes the time to ask about their goals, cheer them on at events, and remind them that their future is worth fighting for.

“He’s humble and kind. He makes you feel like you matter,” said Luis M., a VeloYouth participant from Chula Vista. “When I won my first race, he was one of the first people to shake my hand.”

A lifelong cyclist who began riding competitively as a teenager in Mexico, Melcer uses his own story to inspire students. His academic path—from a physics degree at UNAM to a master’s in oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography—proves what’s possible with perseverance, focus, and the right support system.

Outside of VeloYouth, Melcer’s community involvement extends to improving digital access in the South Bay. With over two decades of experience running internet and tech companies, he’s helped advise nonprofits, schools, and local leaders on how to close the connectivity gap—something he views as essential for education and economic mobility.

In his corporate career, Melcer has led several ventures, including iTrackr Systems and Superclick, Inc., specializing in communication technologies for hospitality and healthcare. But it’s his current and ongoing role at FrontCom.com, where he’s served as President since 1998, that best represents his long-term approach to leadership and service.

“Jacobo blends business sense with heart,” said a colleague who has worked with him for over 15 years. “He’s never in it for the spotlight. He’s in it to help, to mentor, and to make his community stronger.”

His work hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2024, VeloYouth board members voted to recognize Melcer with its Community Anchor Award, given annually to one individual whose sustained commitment has strengthened the organization and the lives it touches.

“Jacobo brings a wealth of professional experience to the VeloYouth Board, especially his great connections to the South Bay community,” said Hoffmann. “But more importantly, he brings patience, mentorship, and a deep sense of humanity.”

As the South Bay continues to grow and diversify, Melcer’s local legacy serves as a model for how business leaders can use their experience and resources to empower the next generation. His story shows that investing in people—not just projects—yields the greatest return.

Whether through mentoring a student, sponsoring a nonprofit program, or quietly advising local leaders, Jacobo Melcer remains a vital force for good in Bonita and South San Diego.
