Warning to F-1 OPT Students: Failure to Report Employment May Lead to Termination of SEVIS Record

Ridgewood, New Jersey – F-1 visa students participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT) must remain vigilant about maintaining their legal status in the U.S. A recent notice from the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) highlights the consequences of failing to report employment during OPT.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) monitors all international students through the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System). OPT allows F-1 students to gain hands-on experience related to their major field of study. OPT allows F-1 students to gain hands-on experience related to their major field of study. However, under federal regulation 8 CFR § 214.2(f)(10)(ii)(E), students are only allowed an aggregate of 90 days of unemployment during the 12-month OPT period.
