About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Attorney Eric L. Pines Featured on the Aaron Harber Show on PBS: Exposes Systemic Failings in Federal Workforce and Advocates for Reform

Pines Federal

Houston, TexasAttorney Eric L. Pines, Principal of Pines Federal Employment Attorneys, appeared on the Aaron Harber Show on PBS on May 13, 2025, to shine a spotlight on the challenges facing the federal workforce. In a candid and powerful discussion, Pines, a nationally recognized advocate for federal employees’ rights, delivered a compelling critique of systemic dysfunction within the federal employment system.

Known for his decades of experience defending federal employees, Pines addressed a range of troubling issues that continue to undermine the integrity and effectiveness of government agencies. He called out widespread problems, including poor management practices, entrenched nepotism, lack of managerial accountability, and deeply rooted political interference.

During his appearance, Pines focused on the alarming trend of unjust terminations of probationary employees, those new to federal service who are particularly vulnerable to political whims and managerial abuses. “Probationary employees are being let go without due process, often for arbitrary or politically motivated reasons,” Pines stated. “This is a fundamental failure of justice that threatens the integrity of our civil service.”

Pines also issued a strong call for enhanced whistleblower protections. He emphasized that the current legal framework leaves whistleblowers exposed to retaliation and career ruin, discouraging them from coming forward. “We need real safeguards for those brave enough to expose corruption and misconduct,” Pines said. “Without that, we silence accountability.”

On part 2 of the show, Pines shared specific cases that illustrate the toxic culture of retaliation plaguing many federal agencies. He revealed how high-level officials use reporting requirements and unrealistic performance standards as tools of punishment against employees who speak out or simply don’t conform to toxic internal cultures. “There’s a pattern of abuse, employees are targeted, isolated, and destroyed using the very systems meant to measure performance or ensure compliance,” Pines stated.

Pines pointed out that federal employees seeking justice face an uphill battle. Complex procedures, prolonged appeals, and a lack of internal checks allow misconduct to flourish unchecked. “The system is broken,” he said. “Federal employees deserve a functional, fair process that protects (not punishes) them for doing the right thing.”

Eric Pines continues to be a vital voice in the fight to reform the system and protect the thousands of dedicated public servants working within it. His appearance on the Aaron Harber Show serves as both a wake-up call and a call to action for government leaders, policymakers, and the American public.
