About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

440Hz Guitar Tuning Standard & 432Hz Alternative: Musicians' Guide Released

Music retailer Sam Ash has released a report on the political and historical origins of the 440Hz tuning standard, challenging its dominance and highlighting modern alternatives embraced by musicians worldwide.

-- The newly released educational material investigates the controversial adoption of 440Hz as the global tuning standard, tracing its evolution from natural acoustics to 20th-century political interference. Sam Ash's analysis aims to inform musicians working with increasingly customizable tuning options in today's market.

The full report can be found at https://www.samash.com/spotlight/the-440hz-tuning-standard-mystery

The report explores the early use of tuning systems based on natural sounds, followed by technological milestones such as the invention of the tuning fork by John Shore in 1711. Central to the controversy is a 1939 international conference organized by Joseph Goebbels, where 440Hz was promoted without input from French musicians, 23,000 of whom had voted in favor of 432Hz.

Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, active decades earlier, also resisted the shift toward higher tuning frequencies. In the 1880s, Verdi prohibited performances of his works above 435Hz, citing both mathematical and physiological concerns. His preference for 432Hz gained further support in a 1989 study of Stradivarius violins, which found reduced string tension and improved resonance at lower frequencies.

Although the International Organization for Standardization formally adopted 440Hz in 1955 and reaffirmed it in 1975, debate persists. A study involving 33 participants found that music played at 432Hz produced greater reductions in heart and respiratory rates than 440Hz, suggesting potential wellness implications. Some instruments, such as bagpipes, continue to operate on standards ranging from 466Hz to 480Hz.

Today, digital tuners with adjustable calibration settings represent the fastest-growing market segment. These devices enable musicians to select alternative tunings according to genre, instrument, or personal preference. Market forecasts estimate that such tuners will comprise nearly 60% of sales by 2026.

Sam Ash offers a range of digital tuners from brands such as Korg, Boss, GOGO, and Planet Waves, with support from its Gear Experts program—staffed by musicians and engineers who advise customers on calibration settings suited to their needs. The company also facilitates custom instrument orders for users requiring non-standard tunings.
