The recent expansion follows continuing concern about access to subsidised testosterone treatment after the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme tightened its eligibility criteria on 1 April 2015. An official Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee Drug Utilisation Sub-Committee report, published in September 2016, found that the number of patients starting PBS-subsidised testosterone therapy fell by 60% in the year following the changes, from 9,781 to 3,940. This figure refers specifically to new patients receiving subsidised treatment, not 60% of the total patient population losing access.

TRT Australia’s telehealth model aims to address broader weaknesses in regional healthcare access. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reported in November 2025 that Australians living in rural and remote areas experience higher rates of hospitalisation, mortality, and injury while also having poorer access to primary healthcare services than people living in major cities.

For patients already receiving TRT before the 2015 PBS changes, interruptions in treatment may have led to the return or worsening of low-testosterone symptoms. While Urology Times notes that evidence on lifelong dependence remains limited, a 2016 study found that stopping TRT returned testosterone to hypogonadal levels and worsened several clinical measures in some patients.
