Ms. Ella Cheong selected as Top Attorney of the Year by IAOTP

Ella Cheong, Senior Partner at ELLALAN, Notary Public of Hong Kong and Justice of the Peace appointed for Hong Kong SAR, was recently selected as Top Attorney of the Year for 2022 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for her outstanding leadership and commitment to practicing IP Law.

With many years of professional experience and excellence within Intellectual Property Law, Ms. Ella Cheong first founded the IP Department of Wilkinson & Grist, then Ella Cheong Law Office and concurrently Ella Cheong (HK/BJ) of Hong Kong and Beijing, the latter of which she sold and gave her share of the entire proceeds to charitable causes. Ms. Cheong furthered her success with the invitation of the Singapore Government’s request to establish Ella Cheong LLC in Singapore, with a supporting office of Ella Cheong IP Services Sdn Bhd in Malaysia.

Currently, Ms. Ella Cheong is the Senior Consultant with the Ella Cheong Law firm being merged and is now known as ELLALAN in Hong Kong. She represents multi-national corporations and advises on IP Laws, offering commercially viable and pragmatic solutions to her clients from her profound experiences and expertise in law.

She is highly skilled in all facets of law, which includes advising and procuring of protection for clients in all sectors of business for Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs), such as applying for registration of patents, designs, copyright, trademarks, trade names, and domain names; also advising on the valuation and commercialization of such IPRs, as well as for any of the trade secrets and confidential information of clients, and including technology transfers. She also handles enforcement by way of litigation in the Courts in HK and China and even Macao, for infringements (including counterfeits) and passing-off of any of such IPRs. These issues are handled for both domestic and international clients, for the territories of Hong Kong and China, and particularly for all ASEAN countries (i.e. Brunei, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, MALAYSIA, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, SINGAPORE, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam), and also throughout the world through her network of close international associates. She is also noted for her skills in the licensing and franchising sectors, and known for her written articles on such subjects, including her initial contribution and annual updates on International Franchising by Centre for International Legal Studies of Austria, and also for licensing royalty rates for Walters Kluwer of USA. She has often been invited and spoken on IPRs at many seminars and on panels at various IP conferences and forums world-wide.”

Throughout her illustrious career, Ms. Ella Cheong has received numerous awards and accolades and was recognized for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession. This year she will be considered for a feature article in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and for the Empowered Woman of the Year Award given by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). She will be honored for her distinction as Top Attorney of the Year for 2022 at IAOTP’s Annual Awards Gala being held at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas this December.

Ms. Cheong was selected as the Most Influential Woman in Patent and Trademark Law for 2018-Hong Kong by Acquisition International Excellence Awards, she was inducted into the IP Hall of Fame in 2018 by IAM and Globe Business Media Group, and she was honored with the APAA Enduring Impact Award from the Asian Patent Attorneys Association. Ms. Cheong was awarded with the Roll of Honour from the Hong Kong Law Society; she won the INTA President’s Award from the International Trademark Association and earned the Hong Kong Outstanding Women Entrepreneurs Award from the Hong Kong Women Professionals & Entrepreneurs Association. Ms. Cheong received an Award of Merit and now is a Member of Honour of AIPPI (Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriété Intellectuelle), and she is also a Member of Honour of FICPI (Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle).

Ms. Cheong is featured annually in many IP Publications such as World Intellectual Property Review, IAM 1000, Managing IP, Who’s Who Legal- including Trademarks, Franchise, Patent & Business Lawyers, Corporate USA Today, Asian Legal Business, Legal 100 Asia, Legal 500 Asia Pacific, Global Law Experts etc.

Additionally, Ms. Cheong belongs to the Law Society of Hong Kong where she was the Former Chair of the Intellectual Property Committee. She is a Member of Justinian, and she serves as the VP of AEA International (Association of European Attorneys International). Ms. Cheong is a Consultant of HK Institute of Certified Marketers (ICM); a Member of the Licensing Executive Society (UK); Member of the CEO Club of Hong Kong Polytechnic University; and Member of LIMA (the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association). She is the Appointed Legal Counsel in Hong Kong for ITC (International Trade Council), and she belongs to the ABI International Directory of Distinguished Leadership Hall of Fame. Ms. Cheong is the Founding President of the Hong Kong Group of APAA (Asian Patent Attorneys Association), was a past member of the Board of Directors for INTA (International Trademark Association). She was for many years Chair of the Group comprising of Independent Members from around the world, representing them on the Council of Presidents and the Executive Committee for AIPPI (Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriété Intellectuelle), and is the first female Asian Council Member of FICPI (Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle).
