About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Hitron rolls out wireless DOCSIS 3.1 test meter at price point to equip every technician

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States - 09-20-2022 (PR Distribution™) -

CGNDP3M works with any DOCSIS 3.1/3.0/2.0/1.1 architecture – low split, mid split and high split; DOCSIS 4.0 meter in development

Philadelphia, PA (SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2022 #4037) – September 20, 2022 – Hitron Technologies, the fastest growing DOCSIS customer premise equipment (CPE) manufacturer in North America, announced that its CGNDP3M Wireless DOCSIS 3.1 Test Meter is in production. The portable, weather-resistant meter gives technicians all the diagnostic tools needed to accurately pinpoint and resolve issues at the customer premise, outside plant, and headend.

The CGNDP3M is controlled by Hitron’s ProMeter mobile app, which is compatible with iOS and Android devices. Technicians can run tests and view the diagnostic readings right on their smartphone or tablet, minimizing device costs and technician learning curves. With a lower price point than traditional test meters, cable operators can afford to equip their entire workforce with diagnostic testing tools to deliver a better customer experience.

“Efficient, effective network testing is essential for controlling operating costs and ensuring quality of service. In collaboration with operators, we’ve designed a tool that empowers technicians to resolve issues the first time and avoid multiple service calls. The CGNDP3M is a preferred meter for field installation and plant maintenance because of its ease of use and low cost of ownership,” said Greg Fisher, President and Chief Technology Officer at Hitron.

Additionally, Hitron is developing a portable test meter for DOCSIS 4.0, the future of the hybrid fiber/coax network. The availability of standard-compliant DOCSIS 4.0 diagnostic tools will be critical as operators engage in lab trials, early deployments, and full-scale deployments.

The CGNDP3M is currently in production. Key features include:

  • Able to scan low split (5-42 MHz), mid split (5-85 MHz), and high split (5-204 MHz) upstream
  • Full frequency spectrum support up to 1.2 GHz
  • Comprehensive diagnostics including: upstream/downstream, spectrum, channel scan, MER, Flux, QAM analysis, OFDM, OFDMA, Ingress, Noise, Ping, and Traceroute
  • Hitron’s exclusive SnapShot takes a snapshot of the network at a particular time
  • SpeedTest measures speeds over 2 Gbps
  • SpeedTest via coax and Ethernet to CPE
  • Battery supports up to 8 hours of operation
  • Optional cloud data collection and reporting
