About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

From Hype to Reality: GPT-5 Performance Underwhelms, Says AI Strategy Course

-

AI Strategy Course has released a detailed analysis of OpenAI’s latest large language model (LLM), GPT-5, concluding that the much-anticipated release falls short of community expectations. Drawing on feedback from AI professionals, developers, and users on Reddit and other public forums, the report highlights performance limitations, hallucinations, benchmark inconsistencies, and a gap between marketing claims and real-world results.

Dan O’Donnell, AI consultant and founder of AI Strategy Course, said the reception to GPT-5 reveals a widening gap between public hype and technical delivery. “People expected a transformational leap over GPT-4, but what they got feels more like a cautious step forward,” O’Donnell explained. “In AI development, progress is rarely linear, but the community was primed for something revolutionary. Instead, many are questioning whether GPT-5’s value matches the level of excitement leading up to the release.”

AI Strategy Course for business AI integration

The analysis incorporates data from a popular Reddit thread where users dissected GPT-5’s capabilities and shortcomings. Comments ranged from frustration over reasoning errors and factual inaccuracies to disappointment with its performance on established AI benchmarks. Many noted that while GPT-5 introduces some improvements in text coherence and coding assistance, these gains are overshadowed by persistent hallucinations, stability issues, and limits in complex problem-solving.

O’Donnell noted that large language models such as GPT-5, GPT-4, and Anthropic’s offerings face a similar challenge: balancing speed, accuracy, and reasoning depth without introducing new failure modes. “Even with advanced AI, errors, bugs, glitches, and breakdowns are part of the landscape,” he said. “The question is how companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic respond to these problems—not just in patches and updates, but in transparency and user communication.”

According to AI Strategy Course, the Reddit discussion revealed recurring themes:

Benchmarks and Results: Users reported little noticeable improvement in reasoning-based benchmarks, suggesting performance gains are incremental rather than transformative.Hallucinations and Context Limits: Despite claims of better context handling, GPT-5 still produces factually incorrect outputs, sometimes with overconfident explanations.Reliability Concerns: Coding tasks, AGI-like reasoning exercises, and multi-step logic tests exposed flaws, including code malfunctions, logical breakdowns, and incomplete results.Community Disappointment: The release was seen by many as the “worst hype-to-reality gap” in recent AI history, with livestream demonstrations and promotional articles failing to match user experience.

One Reddit user summed up the sentiment: “GPT-5 feels like an incremental product update, not the AI revolution we were promised. The limits, errors, and shortcomings are still there—just packaged differently.”

AI Strategy Course’s review stresses that disappointment does not mean failure. O’Donnell acknowledged that OpenAI faces immense pressure to deliver safe, scalable AI at an unprecedented pace. However, he emphasized the need for clearer communication around limitations and realistic use cases. “This isn’t just about AGI timelines or the race to beat competitors like Google and Anthropic,” he said. “It’s about building trust with users through transparency, troubleshooting support, and honest diagnostics of what the model can and can’t do.”

In its advisory to AI professionals, the course recommends that organizations treat GPT-5 as a tool with specific strengths—such as rapid text generation, content drafting, and structured coding assistance—while remaining alert to its flaws in reasoning, factual accuracy, and edge-case performance. “The path forward involves layered systems,” O’Donnell explained. “By combining GPT-5 with validation tools, benchmark testing, and human oversight, companies can avoid costly errors and extract real value from the model.”

AI Strategy Course also highlighted the importance of monitoring updates and patches, as OpenAI continues to refine GPT-5. Many Reddit contributors speculated that a “GPT-5.1” or similar release could address early stability issues, fix recurring bugs, and improve performance across diagnostics. Others called for greater openness around training data, fine-tuning processes, and internal testing benchmarks to help the community better understand the reasons behind certain limitations.

The GPT-5 rollout has also sparked conversations about AI’s trajectory toward AGI. While some enthusiasts view the current model’s shortcomings as a natural stage in the path to advanced general intelligence, others see the slow pace of progress as a sign that scaling up parameters alone is not enough. Discussions on Reddit touched on alternative approaches, including hybrid symbolic reasoning, smaller specialized models, and collaboration between competing companies to share best practices.

Despite the disappointment, AI Strategy Course maintains that GPT-5 remains a valuable addition to the AI toolkit—provided users calibrate expectations. “There’s no question that GPT-5 represents progress,” O’Donnell concluded. “The problem is that expectations were inflated by the hype cycle. If we reframe GPT-5 as part of a gradual evolution rather than a giant leap, we can focus on making it work for real-world cases, troubleshooting issues as they arise, and planning for the next wave of improvements.”
