About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

AFGE Local 1975 Condemns Congressional Mandate for $1 Billion Cut to D.C.'s Budget

By: PRLog

WASHINGTON - March 12, 2025 - PRLog -- The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 1975, representing District government employees, strongly opposes Congress's latest move to force a $1.1 billion reduction in D.C.'s locally funded budget. This unprecedented federal overreach undermines the District's autonomy and directly threatens the services that D.C. residents rely on daily.

On March 11, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution that would revert D.C. spending to Fiscal Year 2024 levels—ignoring the already-approved budget and imposing devastating cuts across public safety, education, transportation, and healthcare. Mayor Muriel Bowser has warned that the cuts would have to be absorbed in just six months, amplifying the damage to essential services.

"This is nothing short of an attack on D.C. and the people who live and work here," said Joey Davis, President of AFGE Local 1975. "Congress has no business dictating how our locally raised tax dollars are spent. This reckless mandate will force layoffs, reduce public safety, and cripple critical services—all while completely disregarding the will of D.C. residents and elected officials."

The potential impacts of these forced cuts include:

  • Public Safety: Deep funding reductions to the Metropolitan Police Department and Fire & Emergency Medical Services, leading to fewer first responders and longer emergency response times.
  • Education: Budget constraints on D.C. Public Schools and public charter schools, risking teacher layoffs and larger class sizes.
  • Public Transportation: Service reductions for WMATA, causing delays and disruptions for daily commuters.
  • Health and Human Services: Cuts to healthcare, housing assistance, and social services programs that support low-income and vulnerable residents.

D.C. generates and controls the vast majority of its own budget, with federal contributions making up less than 1% of total funding. This forced cut does nothing to reduce federal spending—it simply harms D.C. workers, families, and communities.

AFGE Local 1975 demands that the Senate reject this unjust provision and calls on all D.C. residents and allies to stand up against Congressional interference. The workers who keep this city running should not be used as pawns in political games.
