About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Raider Painting Completes Complex West Coast Project for Major Timberland Operation

(PRUnderground) April 10th, 2025

Raider Painting, a commercial painting contractor, has successfully completed a $1.5 million project for one of the largest timberland owner-operators in the United States. The project involved critical structural coatings and corrosion control measures on a highly specialized facility, one of only three on the West Coast capable of loading ocean-going wood chip vessels.

Spanning five months, the project addressed the unique challenges of operating in a highly corrosive environment, including constant exposure to saltwater, humidity, and intense weather patterns. The facility required innovative access solutions and precise coordination to minimize operational downtime while ensuring the safety and longevity of multi-million-dollar machinery and structures.

Tackling Complex Challenges

Due to its complex nature, the project faced several obstacles, including:

  • Limited Access: Scaffolding and pier-based access were required for all work on the 160-foot tower and supporting steel structures.
  • Corrosive Environment: Saltwater, wind, and humidity posed ongoing threats to the structural integrity of the facility.
  • Weather Constraints: Tight timelines were further complicated by rapidly changing weather conditions, which impacted the scheduling of surface preparation and coatings application.

Despite these challenges, the team successfully met the client’s needs by implementing strategic solutions:

  • Access Coordination: Partnered with scaffolding contractors to design and install custom scaffolding and encapsulation systems, ensuring worker safety and efficient project phasing.
  • Maximized Workforce: Scheduled two teams working 16-hour shifts to capitalize on favorable weather conditions and adhere to the client’s downtime requirements.
  • Specialized Materials: Utilized Macropoxy 646 Epoxy Primer and UV-stable Sherloxane 800 polyurethane coatings to provide long-lasting protection against saltwater, UV exposure, and high winds.
  • Surface Preparation: Sandblasted all accessible metal surfaces to SSPC-SP6 Commercial Blast standards, followed by the collection and proper disposal of blast materials.

Delivering Outstanding Results

The project was completed on time and within budget, earning a perfect technical rating of 5 out of 5. The applied coatings have significantly extended the life of the facility’s structures, ensuring continued operations with minimal future maintenance.

The client’s satisfaction was underscored by a referral to another facility—ten times the size—for a similar coatings application, further solidifying the provider’s reputation as a leader in industrial coatings and corrosion control.
