About Cabling Installation & Maintenance

Our mission: Bringing practical business and technical intelligence to today's structured cabling professionals

For more than 30 years, Cabling Installation & Maintenance has provided useful, practical information to professionals responsible for the specification, design, installation and management of structured cabling systems serving enterprise, data center and other environments. These professionals are challenged to stay informed of constantly evolving standards, system-design and installation approaches, product and system capabilities, technologies, as well as applications that rely on high-performance structured cabling systems. Our editors synthesize these complex issues into multiple information products. This portfolio of information products provides concrete detail that improves the efficiency of day-to-day operations, and equips cabling professionals with the perspective that enables strategic planning for networks’ optimum long-term performance.

Throughout our annual magazine, weekly email newsletters and 24/7/365 website, Cabling Installation & Maintenance digs into the essential topics our audience focuses on.

  • Design, Installation and Testing: We explain the bottom-up design of cabling systems, from case histories of actual projects to solutions for specific problems or aspects of the design process. We also look at specific installations using a case-history approach to highlight challenging problems, solutions and unique features. Additionally, we examine evolving test-and-measurement technologies and techniques designed to address the standards-governed and practical-use performance requirements of cabling systems.
  • Technology: We evaluate product innovations and technology trends as they impact a particular product class through interviews with manufacturers, installers and users, as well as contributed articles from subject-matter experts.
  • Data Center: Cabling Installation & Maintenance takes an in-depth look at design and installation workmanship issues as well as the unique technology being deployed specifically for data centers.
  • Physical Security: Focusing on the areas in which security and IT—and the infrastructure for both—interlock and overlap, we pay specific attention to Internet Protocol’s influence over the development of security applications.
  • Standards: Tracking the activities of North American and international standards-making organizations, we provide updates on specifications that are in-progress, looking forward to how they will affect cabling-system design and installation. We also produce articles explaining the practical aspects of designing and installing cabling systems in accordance with the specifications of established standards.

Starfish and UBQ Network Powered by DeltaTrak Partner to Deliver Remaining Shelf-life Prediction

Starfish, the leading neutral platform for connectivity and traceability in the food supply chain, has entered into a strategic partnership with the UBQ Network™, powered by DeltaTrak—a cutting-edge platform delivering real-time cold chain visibility, sustainability insights, and predictive shelf-life capabilities.

(PRUnderground) July 23rd, 2025

Starfish, the leading neutral connectivity and traceability platform for the food supply chain, has announced a strategic partnership with the UBQ Network™, powered by DeltaTrak, a next-generation platform for real-time cold chain visibility, sustainability, and shelf-life prediction. Together, they are redefining how real time data is converted into actionable insights that improve quality, reduce food waste, and power smarter logistics decisions.

This integration brings together UBQ Network’s Freshness Index™ and DeltaTrak’s IoT technology with Starfish’s GS1 EPCIS-based event engine.  Supply chain teams continue to track the when and where of cold chain events, but also understand the how, the why and actions to take.

“In working with UBQ Network we’re not just layering data, we’re providing context and actionable insight” said Wiggs Civitillo, CEO of Starfish.  “That’s the kind of visibility to help food brands transform disconnected events into a continuous story they can act on in real time.”

Freshness Index™: From Sell by Dates to Remaining Shelf-Life Intelligence

At the heart of the collaboration is the Freshness Index™, a proprietary algorithm within the UBQ Network that continuously calculates the remaining shelf life of perishables. Unlike traditional static sell-by, best before or expiration dates, the Freshness Index™ adapts in real time based on actual handling and cold chain conditions.

With this integration:

  • The Starfish platform creates an end-to-end traceability based on FSMA 204 and EPCIS events.
  • The UBQ Network uses Starfish traceability to append temperature data from both DeltaTrak’s IoT devices and other digital platforms.
  • DeltaTrak provides a Model Library that supports various commodities to calculate Remaining Shelf-life Days at any point in the Supply Chain.
  • Stakeholders at Cross Docks, DCs, Stores, and Restaurants can scan GS1 2D barcodes to calculate remaining shelf-life.

“The UBQ Network isn’t just delivering more data or dashboards, it’s delivering a smarter and more accountable cold chain,” said Karl McDermott, Chief SaaS Officer, DeltaTrak. “We’re moving from fragmented tools to a connected ecosystem that predicts, adapts, and improves outcomes for every stakeholder.”

This capability is already being piloted in several key perimeter categories, including fresh produce, seafood, and ready-to-eat foods, and also in food service, where quality and shelf life are mission-critical.

This announcement will be highlighted at the IFPA Global Produce & Floral Show in October, where the UBQ Network will showcase its first-year milestones, ecosystem growth, and new platform capabilities.
